#beautifuldaysaresuchbecauseyoucreatethem love it when my love surprises me #staygroundedandgrateful🙏🏾 #stayintheyellow

- It was great seeing you, Lisa @cumbedance I gotta get back to dance. @godsproperty I wish you were doing #danceforjoy too

Saw @courtneybvance last night. We didn't harass him. But we're big fans.

@JOCELYNBIOH THANK YOU 😊

Run, don’t walk, to go see Jocelyn Bioh’s School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play! It was just extended through November 15, so you still have time, but get your tickets ASAP. First and foremost, I always try to prioritize seeing theatre that reflects the stories of people who look like me—we need so many more of them on stage. School Girls does not disappoint! It takes you on a complete emotional rollercoaster where you feel every single thing: pure joy, belly-aching laughter, and deep nostalgia. But you also feel the real weight and sadness of heavy topics like colorism—a toxic social construct and brainwashing that drives women who should be uplifting each other to tear each other down instead. This show truly has it all: heart, humor, sharp commentary, and powerful performances. Do yourself a favor and catch it before it’s gone!

#rundontwalk An artful evening, fuel for the soul. 🎨✨

Roger Guenveur Smith’s In Honor of Jean-Michel Basquiat is nothing short of breathtaking. Carrying the full weight of brilliance and profound grief, Smith delivers a sharp, hauntingly beautiful one-man show - Rooted in his real life friendship w/ Basquiat, the piece captures the ambition, shared pressure, and tragic vulnerability of a genius lost far too soon. It’s raw, deeply personal, and incredibly moving.

Huge thank you to Patricia, director of New York Theatre Workshop, for being a FORCE.

The night didn't end when the lights came up—the Saturday Salon that followed with Ari Grooves, Dr. Joan Morgan, and Daniel J. Watts was also pure magic and such a rich continuation of the conversation.

Lastly, Happy Birthday to Leroy McCarthy! 🎂🥳 #bbeautifuldaysaresuchbecauseyoucreatethem. Can't wait to see @owendippie finished Basquiat piece. 🇳🇿

Last year, during one of my regular Citi Bike rides—electric, of course—I took a detour down Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights. Sometimes the best New York adventures aren't planned. They're discovered because you decide to turn left instead of right.

As I rounded the corner, music floated through the air. Families filled the streets. Local vendors lined the avenue. The smell of grilled food mixed with the sweetness of homemade desserts. After finding a place to park my bike, I wandered into Franklin Avenue Open Streets and quickly realized I had stumbled onto one of Brooklyn's best-kept Saturday traditions.

I left promising myself I'd return.

This year's Open Streets didn't disappoint.

If you're looking for one of the best ways to spend a Saturday in Brooklyn, Franklin Avenue Open Streets deserves a spot at the top of your list.

Launched on June 7, 2025, the Franklin Avenue Open Streets program was created through a partnership between the Bridge Street Development Corporation, the Franklin Avenue Merchants Association, and the New York City Department of Transportation. What began as a bi-weekly event stretching from Eastern Parkway to St. Marks Avenue—and later expanding to Dean Street—was the result of years of organizing by the Franklin Avenue Merchants Association, which was formed with the goal of bringing an Open Streets program to one of Brooklyn's most vibrant commercial corridors.

Open Streets is truly about people.

As with many neighborhoods across NYC, Brooklyn continues to evolve. New buildings rise beside historic brownstones. Longtime businesses share the block with trendy cafés. Gentrification has threatened to change the landscape As a native of Queens who has called Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights home for the past nine years, I've watched those changes unfold firsthand. Some changes feel exciting. Others spark difficult conversations about affordability, displacement, and preserving neighborhoods.

If you haven't watched @stoop.stories #JimmyandShanaya, do yourself a favor. OAN #brooklynsown #jimmypalmaro is a wonderful poet. Today, he shared the following: #thepowerofaplantedseed💛💛💛💛💛

What is your independence Day? When is your Independence Day? Your 4th of July? Your time to celebrate self-reliance. You don't have one! Nor, do I? No man is an island. And that is true for women. We are connected and dependent. YOU need me. And I need you.

Independence is an illusion. WE are connected and dependent. From the moment we all are conceived. For as long as we last. Just as a future depends on our past.

Even monks! Depend on each other brother to brother. Look around and take in all that you sense and see. How much of it did you truly create and design, Independently?
