I’ve known @artbyabnormal since I was six years old. Forty years.

Before I had language for what a “Cultural Engineer” was, I had an example of one living right in my neighborhood.

He was the one doing graffiti and tagging when nobody around us was thinking about it as an artistic language. He introduced me to Wu-Tang and Bob Marley. His mom was cutting, sewing and designing one-of-one pieces. Music, fashion, graffiti, visual art—it was all culture, and I was watching it being engineered in real time.

When I eventually began painting, @artbyabnormal was one of the very first artists I collaborated with, him creating his painting with my poem titled ‘VOTE’.

Influence isn’t always measured by fame, followers, auction records or institutional recognition. Sometimes the person who fundamentally shapes your imagination is somebody the rest of the world hasn’t learned to celebrate yet.

To me, @artbyabnormal has always been a rock star. A mentor. A hero. A Cultural Engineer.

Sitting in front of his work now, I can see how much of the visual language I developed was informed by simply watching him create over the last four decades.

Forty years later, I’m still a fan. Still collecting. Still collaborating. Still watching him grow.

And still grateful that one of my earliest introductions to the power of culture came from somebody right in my own neighborhood.
