Reverberation (Inside the Hive) #3 is in the current show BFF: Modern Portraits with 33 Contemporary Gallery in Palm Beach and on Artsy. This painting as well as two others in this series are included in the show. In this series, I move from a representational portrait to the more abstract one, which is #3. I often work in series, and since my main subject is a figure undergoing some kind of transformation, which could be physical, psychological, or spiritual, it is natural for me to create paintings that range from fairly realistic to almost completely abstract. Some viewers have asked me how an abstract painting can be a portrait. There is much to say on this subject, but one quote I particularly like is this one by Annie Leibovitz:

"In portraiture, you have so much leeway, so much latitude. You can be conceptual, you can be abstract, you can tell a story, you can be journalistic if you want; you have so many options available in portraiture, and you're not confined to one idea."

Since I like to experiment in my paintings, I find it very freeing to work with this idea. 🌞

To view more of my work, please visit @33Contemporary @PoetsArtists @Artsy.

And now my work is also available through 33 Contemporary Gallery on @ArtCloud. Please click the link to see this painting there: https://artcloud.market/art/4971928.

SAVE THE DATE! Opening Friday, January 17, 6-8 p.m. - Spalding Nix Fine Art proudly presents FORGING AHEAD, a presentation of four solo shows by Heather Bird Harris, Andrew Herzog, Robert Hightower & Jamie Bourgeois.

Opening Receptions - Friday, January 17, 6 - 8 p.m. & Saturday, January 18, 12 - 4 p.m.

‘Forging’ is defined as the act of making or shaping a metal object with heat; the act of creating a relationship or new conditions; or to produce a copy or imitation of something for the purpose of deception. ‘Forging ahead’ is to make quick progress, moving boldly against resistance.

Marking the first exhibition of 2025, the artists in this show examine our history & our impacts on the planet & one another, creating work that informs how we might move forward to shape our future. Heather Bird Harris’s series of new paintings “love as large as grief demands” transforms mapped industrial scars in Georgia & Louisiana into regenerative landscapes made with site-specific materials. Andrew Herzog’s “Day(‘)s End” is a series of rock pigment & mixed media paintings that meditate on the residues left by human activity—material, cultural & temporal—& the ways in which they inform the landscapes of the present & future. Robert Hightower’s “Icons of the Toybox” is a series of oil & enamel paintings that reflect on the mass production & marketing of non-essential products starting in the 1950s, inaugurating our transition from ‘basic capitalism’ to ‘American Consumerism.’ Jamie Bourgeois’s “Petrochemical PLANTS” is a series of earth pigment & assemblage paintings that explore the pervasive & insidious nature of plastics & petrochemicals as they disrupt & accumulate in ecosystems & in our bodies.

All artists will be in attendance on Friday night! #contemporaryart #anthropoceneart #artandenvironment #environmentaljustice #atlantaartopening #heyartlover #climateart

I had almost finished this, before the fires 🙈

This one was in the basement, thankfully I had not moved it over to @thecreativeresidence which did not survive the Jasper Wildfire of July ‘24. I was not happy messing up the perfect white paint…and little did I know it would be one of a few pieces that I still have…and I look at it so differently now, in multiple ways. Yup, black paint has a new pull on me as an artist.

My next #popupartgallery was that upcoming weekend. One more side to paint…and if I remember correctly I was going to mix it up with COLOUR ✨ Or maybe I’ll burn the last side…hmmm 🧐

Come see me at the Christmas Market, Dec 8, 11-4pm! I’ll have a variety of pieces with me to see in person and share with you (and a coffee overload too ☕️ Hosted by @andromeda.snowdome.coffee + @bombshellboutiquejasper + @ransomjasper 👀🤗
