Is it possible to have compost envy?⁣ ⁣ I can’t complain because I live in DC where there are lots of great composting options —free food scrap drop-off sites, and three companies that offer pick-up service (Compost Crew, Compost Cab and Veterans Compost). But Arlington County, Virginia made things even easier in September when they introduced a residential food scrap waste collection program. I’ve been watching this closely and friends who live in nearby Arlington have been sending me pictures of their systems. Thanks, Charlie, Priscilla and Jodi for the pics 🙏. ⁣ ⁣ So simple: the county gave away bins and compostable bags to all residents to store their food scraps for the week. Once a week, the county picks up the food scraps in a separate green “organic waste” container, alongside trash pickup. Arlington County has a “zero waste goal” of diverting 90% of waste away from incineration by 2038. 👏 👏 👏 ⁣ ⁣ Do you live in a county with local compost collection? If not, here’s something you can do: ask your local representative to introduce it! 😀
