Meet Charlie Farrell (@artfully.thought), a St. Louis-based curator, researcher and writer. Critical Minded sat with Charlie during the Art Papers Symposium in 2025 to discuss the relationship between critics and artists. This conversation now lives among the others in our portrait series, Not for Sale.

Charlie is the Assistant Curator of arts organization, Counterpublic. She served as the 2022-2024 Romare Bearden Graduate Museum Fellow at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Recent projects include Radical Rage (2026) at Stove Works, Wangechi Mutu: My Cave Call (2024), and Romare Bearden: Resonances (2024), both at the Saint Louis Art Museum. Farrell has also held positions at the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art of the African Diaspora (MoCAAD) and the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, both in Florida.

On July 28, I celebrated a full year of working as @counterpublic Public Programs Manager! It has been such a journey from 6 years as full-time stay-at-home-dad / freelance graphic designer to being a full-time employee of an arts org in St. Louis’ vibrant and bustling arts and culture community! I couldn’t have asked for a better place to land or a better team to be a part of. It’s something special to be fully aware that the “good old days” are now and that you’re a part of a “golden era” crew. When I came on board, I immediately felt like everyone had my back and I theirs. After a year of workshops, talks, activations, a freaking Convening, and literally 1 million e-mails, I know that that bond remains stronger than ever. As we gear up to the opening of Counterpublic 2026 Coyote Time (September 10 - December 12), I urge every single one of you to check out this incredible citywide arts exhibition. We’ve had the great fortune of working with 5 amazing curators, 50 incredible artists, and a legion of creatives, builders, and community partners working tirelessly behind the scene to bring dreams into fruition. I’m incredibly proud of Counterpublic’s work and I know in my heart of hearts that St. Louis deserves a triennial of this caliber. We should all be so proud. All info, programs schedule, and more can be found at counterpublic.org

P.S. Catch some incredible performances from composer Nina Keith and SLSO musicians, Natural Information Society (performing a durational set amongst Joshua Abrams and Lisa Alvarado’s sculpture), Kite (along with Alex Cunningham, Lex Kosieradzki, Mere Harrach, and Andre Lubart) in response to their dream sculpture piece in Tower Grove Park, Tromarama (activating their sculpture with Ousmane Gaye, Danielle Feinstein, NNN Cook, and Alberto Patiño), Damon Smith performing Ben Patterson’s ‘Variations for Double Bass (1961)’, and more!!
