Nov 6 From @artgalleryns — Good music, fantastic company, great art, and a night at the AGNS. Sounds like a pretty solid plan. 🥂 Come hang out with us for an evening of art, conversation, and a peek behind the curtain at how four icons of Atlantic Realism worked. Get up close with rare sketches and studies by Alex Colville, Tom Forrestall, Christopher Pratt, and Mary Pratt, and see how some of their most celebrated paintings went from an idea to the finished work in the new exhibition The Work Behind the Work. ✨ Plus, there’s plenty more to check out while you’re here, from the newly rehung Ondaatje Gallery to new exhibitions like Silt and Sugar, and Forshaw Day: Looking Outward. 🎟️ Lock in your tickets now via the link in our bio and make a night of it. Special thanks to our partners at @downtownhalifax for helping make this celebration happen! ——— Image: Alex Colville, Ocean Limited, 1962 (detail). Oil and synthetic resin on Masonite. 68.5 x 119.3 cm. From @artgalleryns — The city never really stands still. There are stories unfolding, strangers crossing paths, and little moments happening all around us. 🌙 🌃 A special shoutout to Eléctrico 28 (@electrico28theatercollective) for bringing [ The Frame ] to AGNS Courtyard and turning the everyday rhythm of city life into something to experience together. To everyone else who spent Nocturne: Art at Night (@nocturnehalifax) with us, you brought the energy, the curiosity, and we loved every minute of it. Thanks for making it a night to remember! ✨ ——— Images: Stoo Metz Photography. #Nocturne2026 #NocturneHalifax #ArtAfterDark #AGNS

For an extraordinary feature in Volume 37 of [EDIT] magazine, award-winning poet Thandiwe McCarthy and acclaimed photographer Gary Weekes followed curator David Woods on a remarkable journey across the Maritimes, documenting his tireless efforts to bring the work of pioneering Black Canadian artist Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828–1901) to the attention of the country that has too often overlooked him. Their journey took them to the Owens Art Gallery @owensartgallery in Sackville, New Brunswick, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax @artgalleryns, and the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown @confedcentre, Prince Edward Island, as Woods brought his groundbreaking exhibition Hidden Blackness: Edward Mitchell Bannister (1828–1901) to audiences across Atlantic Canada. Born in Saint Andrews, New Brunswick, Bannister became one of the most celebrated painters of his generation, achieving extraordinary success in the United States while remaining largely unrecognized in his homeland. More than a century after his death, David Woods has made it his mission to change that, championing Bannister’s extraordinary artistic legacy and challenging the way we recognize, celebrate and remember Black Canadian excellence. The resulting feature, A Journey Across Time, is a powerful and personal exploration of art, history, identity, recognition and the importance of ensuring that remarkable Canadian stories are never forgotten. Thandiwe’s thoughtful reflections, accompanied by Gary’s magnificent photography, capture not only the beauty and significance of Bannister’s work but also the passion and determination of the man working to secure his rightful place in Canadian art history. We are delighted to share a selection of Gary Weekes’ beautiful photographs from their extraordinary time together, alongside the pages of the finished feature, published in Volume 37 of [EDIT]. A huge thank you to David, Thandiwe and Gary for bringing this important story to life. #MaritimeEdit #CanadianArt #BlackCanadianHistory #EdwardMitchellBannister #AtlanticCanada

We live in Halifax...waiting for perfect weather seems... inefficient ☂️ Some of our favourite days in the city are actually the grey ones. The kind that call for a tiny coffee shop, an afternoon wandering through the Art Gallery, a bookstore with nowhere else you need to be and a waterfront that’s almost entirely yours. Catch a matinee at Neptune, find an old-school pub and order something warm, then, when you’ve had enough fresh Atlantic air for one day, tuck into a table at Gio for cocktails and dinner. Just a very good Halifax day that may or may not require an umbrella ☂️
