💕 When the art imitates life! 🎨🥹
While vacationing in Martha’s Vineyard, I was walking to Inkwell Beach for PinkWell Beach Day when I spotted this painting by a D.C. artist @artgillumo . The moment I saw her, I knew I had to bring her home! 🩷

A little piece of my childhood, captured on canvas! Those pigtails, pretty dresses, Sunday best, and twirling around the yard without a care in the world… My mama knew how to dress her girl! 💃🏽✨
Little Twanda would be happy to know… not much has changed!

The best of H Street Fest 🖤

Fun fact about me: I will go & do anything by myself 😂🤷🏽‍♂️ Yesterday’s solo mission turned into good vibes, familiar faces, a few drinks & a reminder that sometimes you just gotta get dressed and GO.

And speaking of getting dressed… the FIT. 😎
Head-to-toe @incerunmenshop in their Avant-Garde Sheer Chevron Mesh Two-Piece. Lightweight, sheer, effortless, & definitely made for being outside.

🏷️ Use code CARY15 for 15% off your order.

H Street, you never disappoint. Until next year✌🏽🖤✨

Union Market is selling itself off, and the walls know it.

Five frames from a May walk with the Ansco Speedex Special R, a folding camera older than most of the buildings about to replace the ones in these pictures.

A little history, because it’s the whole point: a public market fed this city from a block on Pennsylvania Avenue for almost 130 years, until the government closed it on New Year’s Day 1931 and knocked it down to build the National Archives. One month later the merchants reopened up here by the rail yards — wholesale produce, meat packers, farmers renting stalls for a quarter a day. It stayed a working food district for decades. Unglamorous, loud, family-run. The open-air market closed in ‘76 and the block settled into forklifts and cold storage. The food hall you know reopened in 2012. Everything since has been cranes.

So the art out here isn’t decoration. It’s the neighborhood arguing with itself. LIBERTY! FOR SALE? A soup can labeled YES-MAN. Monks carrying a banner that reads there is no peace, under orange letters insisting today will be a peaceful day.

None of it was made to last. Most of it will be behind drywall or under primer within a year.

That’s why I keep coming back with an old camera. No meter, no second chances, no delete button, eight frames to a roll. Feels like the honest way to document something moving this fast.

Swipe through — tell me which of these walls are already gone.

🛑 STOP COMPLAINING & LIFT WHATEVER GOD PUTS IN YOUR HAND. 🫷🏽

Now THAT’S a word for the times we find ourselves in.

Wars between countries.
Wars within nations.
Race wars.
Class wars.
Industry wars.

Yet perhaps the greatest war of all is the one happening WITHIN.

I find it ironic at best, and preposterous at worst, that we believe sitting around complaining about the realities of life, offering our “expert” opinion on everything known 2 man, is somehow moving the needle toward progress.

Everybody has a finger pointed.

At the government.
At the industry.
At the rich.
At the poor.
At this generation.
At that generation.
At THEM.

But what about US?

The chaos we witness in the macro is often a magnification of the chaos we refuse 2 confront in the micro.

Different manifestations.
Same frequencies.

Fear.
Greed.
Ego.
Insecurity.
Control.
Separation.

Until we address what lives within us, we will continue trying 2 rearrange externally what we have refused to heal internally.

& THIS is where the grace of GOD becomes so magnificent.

When you develop an authentic, intrinsic relationship with the SOURCE of all sources and realize that the TRUE KINGDOM is within, something changes.

You can be in this world without becoming of it.

You learn how 2 endure without becoming hardened.

How 2 weather valleys without losing your vision.

How 2 find JOY in the storm, PURPOSE in the pressure & PEACE that circumstances cannot negotiate away. ⚡️

& lately I’ve realized something:

GOD IS MY TRAINER. 🏋🏽‍♀️

Every disappointment added weight.
Every betrayal added resistance.
Every closed door increased the incline.
Every valley strengthened muscles I didn’t know I would need.

So I’m grateful for the pruning.
Grateful for the preparation.
Grateful for the conditioning.

Because I know the incline may get steeper.

But after training at these altitudes?

I WAS BUILT TO SOAR. 🦅

Even in the valley.

So before you judge somebody by what they’re carrying,

Remember:

YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THEY HAD TO GO THROUGH 2 BE STRONG ENOUGH 2 LIFT THAT WEIGHT. 💪🏽

& whatever GOD put in YOUR hands?

Stop complaining about how heavy it is.
