🛵Meet @arthaus_decorah’s new executive director — who arrived on a moped carrying a salmon. Yes, you read that right. When LeRoy Smith pulled into the ArtHaus parking lot Friday morning, he rolled up on a bright white moped, wearing what he jokingly called a “Tony Soprano outfit” and carrying a cross-body bag shaped like a life-size salmon. And honestly? It might be the perfect introduction for someone whose vision is all about creativity, authenticity and making space for people to be themselves. Smith, ArtHaus’ new executive director, isn’t looking to simply offer art classes and send people home. He wants ArtHaus to become a true community gathering place — a spot where kids stop by after school, remote workers can settle in with a laptop, artists can experiment, neighbors can connect and everyone feels welcome (even if they don’t consider themselves “artists”). 🎨 In his first days on the job, Smith is learning the ins and outs of the organization — but his bigger vision is already clear: build on ArtHaus’ nearly 20-year history while expanding its role as a creative “third space” for Decorah. From his childhood “fake commercials” with friends to studying fine art at Luther College, working in corporate marketing and eventually returning to a more community-focused life, Smith says his path has always led back to creativity. Now, he hopes ArtHaus can become the kind of place people don’t just visit — but a place they want to stay. Read more about ArtHaus’ new chapter and the unconventional (and very memorable) person leading it. 👇 [link]

Last weekend, we took a last-minute trip to Decorah, lowa and a few nearby towns. Most people think of lowa as a place you can skip...flat land, farms, nothing to see. But my short time there reminded me how wrong that assumption is. We found a beautiful waterfall (and even hiked up it), wandered through a Norwegian museum and learned about early immigration, spent slow mornings in cafés, painted ceramics at a community-supported art haus that opened just for us, and ended the trip at a woman-owned indie bookstore highlighting Midwestern authors. We left feeling lighter, calmer, and more grounded than when we arrived. It was a gentle reminder that small towns can slow you down in ways big cities never do and they often hold the kind of perspective you don't notice until you're standing right in the middle of it ❤️ A collage of pictures taken in Decorah, Iowa with overlaid text that reads "Decorah, Iowa surprised me. Here are 5 things you shouldn't skip."
