“Although Comment is Free paints a grim view of contemporary culture, imaginative staging and very strong performances make the production compelling rather than repulsive.”

That’s a wrap on The BBC’s First Homosexual - feeling rather overwhelmed with the response we got and it’s made my first @edfringe experience very special. Thanks to all the legends that made this what it is - I love you all ❤️

🏳️‍🌈 That’s a wrap on Edinburgh.

And what a run it’s been.

The BBC’s First Homosexual came to Edinburgh with a remarkable story to tell - and leaves with a sold-out run, brilliant audiences and an extraordinary collection of four and five-star reviews.

“Powerful.”
“Remarkably moving.”
“A funny and vital piece of theatre.”
“Utterly superb.”
“A sublime piece of theatre.”
“One of my favourite play experiences of the year.”

We’re incredibly proud of the whole company and everyone who has brought this production to life - on stage and behind the scenes.

And to every audience member who bought a ticket, came along, laughed, listened, talked about the show, shared a post or recommended it to someone else: thank you. You’ve been a huge part of this journey. ❤️

From England, Ireland to Scotland, this story has travelled a long way - and we have a feeling it may not be finished yet.

So, what’s next for The BBC’s First Homosexual?

Watch this space. 👀 🏳️‍🌈

🌟 A look back at some of the love for The BBC’s First Homosexual at Edinburgh Fringe.

Our Edinburgh shows have received an incredible response from critics, with reviews celebrating the performances, the production and the story at its heart.

From “wonderful” and “an important play” to “superb”, “a sublime piece of theatre” and “vital and timely”, these are just some of the words written about the show during its time at The Crate.

With the final performances now sold out, we’re enjoying these last few days and everything this Edinburgh adventure has brought with it. 🏳️‍🌈

★★★★★ Another five-star review!

The BBC’s First Homosexual has received five stars from Culture Fix, with the production described as “a sublime piece of theatre.”

It joins an increasingly impressive run of four and five-star reviews from critics at Edinburgh Fringe, alongside a brilliant response from audiences. ⭐

Culture Fix highlights the production’s genuine warmth and humour, and the way it brings the human stories behind this important piece of LGBTQ+ history to life.

With the Edinburgh run now sold out, we’re heading into the final weekend at The Crate, with the last performance taking place on Sunday 16 August. 🏳️‍🌈
