Making odd sounds at @oddestnumber

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

For my next release I wanted to explore a more fluid way to get the tracks out there. This short mix (15min) is my first attempt at it. It has 2 new tracks and a previous release.

I’m still learning how to use the DJ controller, so apologies in advance for the awkward drops and inconsistent volume.

I do find it a fun challenge to record these mixes as it’s kind of like a “one-take” thing where any mistake can ruin the whole set. It really feels like it makes the tracks come life in an exciting way (at least for me, lol)

Check out my soundcloud to listen to the whole thing. These mixes will be a bit ephemeral as I’m already running out of space on Soundcloud (and refuse to pay £10 per month just to host tracks), so may need to delete them to add new ones.

Movimento is my new single and an EP with a collection of fluid tracks.

Each track explores a different direction, weaving together disco, breakbeats, Brazilian influences, jazz and electronic music.

I recorded the Movimento track alongside my good friend Tom Keirle, who came to my place earlier this year to jam and simply nailed that piano solo in a single take.

I’ve also made minor improvements on the previous releases (Planetário, Estrondo and Elevador) and it’s all available now on all platforms.

So happy to be part of this community project to celebrate @fourtetkieran 25th anniversary of the album Pause.

I chose to reinterpret Glue of the World on the acoustic guitar, playing fragments of the track main chords on a stereo delay and improvising on top of it.

Many thanks to the Discord community for accepting my submission and for putting this project together!

New music out today!

Probably my most organic track to date, based around a bass guitar solo and some acoustic guitar layers. No synth or electronic elements other than various beats samples I played around in the DJ controller (mid-life crisis mode full on)

The name Estrondo (meaning a loud noise in Portuguese) comes from the lyrics of the song, which in this instrumental version are not present. One day I may record it…

Thanks for reading this and supporting my music. Please consider sharing this with friends to help it reach out more people.🙏

New track out: Planetário

I did this track some time in January. I was playing around with acoustic guitar samples from my earlier ambient work and accidentally pitched one of the samples up by an octave, making it sound faster and higher in tone. This created a kind of harp-like sound that got me really excited, and from there I added a simple drum loop sample and composed a synth sequence line that modulates throughout the track.

I hope you find as much joy in listening to it as I had creating it. If you want to support my music, please consider having a listen on your preferred platform, adding it to a playlist, and sharing this post. ✌️

Balanço is the opener track of our new EP.

I always keep the guitar close by and play something in my free time, always inspired by the classics of Brazilian music.

When I notice that I’ve been playing the same melody for a while and it still sounds good, I try to record it so I won’t forget.

That’s how Balanço came about. While I was recording the main melody, other melodies started emerging, including the guitar solo, which was recorded in a single take. I tried re-recording the solo a few times because the original had some imperfections, but I was never able to reproduce the same rhythm and flow as the first version, so I decided to keep it.

After recording the guitar, I spent months adding small details and textures: layers of ambient synths, light percussion, shakers, and even singing bowl samples.

The name Balanço is inspired by the rhythm of the notes moving between E minor and B minor, reminiscent of the motion of waves. It also alludes to the balance of mind and body, a recurring theme in our compositions.

Many thanks to everyone who tuned in our latest EP. If you came this far, thank you so much! It means the world. 🙏

New EP is out on all platforms, with 3 new tracks exploring a more acoustic, laid back sound.

The EP is called Sintonia, a word that doesn’t have a direct translation in English but can mean “tuning” (adjusting frequencies) or “being in sync” (like when two people are on the same wavelength).

This title reflects the music you’ll find on the EP: a mix of Brazilian acoustic guitar, with influences from viola caipira (a Brazilian guitar style that reflects my upbringing in Brazil’s countryside), along with the more rhythmic techniques of Samba and Bossa Nova.

Added to this are light percussion, atmospheric ambient synths, and downtempo experimental beats (the usual Oddest Number stuff)

I made a silly video for the title track, so please do check it out on YouTube and subscribe over there!

Thanks so much for reading this far and for supporting my music. It means a lot! 🖤

Music has always been like a little time machine for me.

When listening to this track, I always remember of sunny spring and summer days riding this blue bike up and down Stamford Hill. So decided to make a little video out of it.

“Música ambiente do Brasil”.
