At the magnificent Tata Theatre last Tuesday, for the launch of Mapin Publishing's 'Bapji: The King Who Would Be Man' - a pictorial biography of Maharaja Gajsingh II of Marwar–Jodhpur.

After an elegant high tea (or cold coffee), the award-winning SAZ Trio set the tone for an evening of culture, history and heritage by celebrating the musical traditions of Rajasthan... before the book was ceremoniously unveiled.

The conversation between Bapji and co-authors Yogi Vaid and Aman Nath, most ably moderated by Asad Lalljee of Avid Learning, was a delightful discussion on the royal rituals, personal moments, architectural heritage, and cultural landscape that shaped the life of a ruler who reimagined kingship as public service in post-Independence India. Peppered with repartee, wit and wisdom, there was never a dull moment. And yes, let's always remember that legacy is not what we inherit, it is what we leave behind.

When the ever-graceful Mallika Sarabhai took the stage to speak about Mapin's mission as publishers, it was the perfect finale for me - a longtime admirer of her prodigious talent as a dancer and her strong-willed candour as a public personality.

Meeting her and Aman Nath after a decade or more, was the highlight of my night. And spending such a stimulating evening with friends, was a highly satisfying way to end two months of feverish work!
