All I got from two weeks at Penland School of Craft was... a heart full of Blue Ridge Mountain glory, friendships I'll treasure for a lifetime, a new skill acquisition and love for glassblowing, and a rock collection that somehow multiplied along the way. An enchanted convergent amalgam of interests and craft, where fire met earth and I got to play with both.

Welp We did it, y’all.

Thanks to the support of @crafting_the_future and help from all of you 🙌🏾 , I made it to Penland, where I spent two weeks immersing myself in a medium I’ve never touched before…. Wet felting.

There were moments when I felt inadequate. As a self-taught artist, it’s easy to compare yourself to people with different training and experiences. But this trip reminded me that being self-taught is one of my greatest strengths. I’ve built my practice with my hard work and determination plus the willingness to learn (🥹🫶🏾thank you for the reminder @justin.rtc ) . When you’re open to the experience, growth has a funny way of finding you.

One lesson I’m bringing home with me among many : it’s okay to feel like a scrap of fabric sometimes. Just don’t forget that you can always piece yourself back together into something new.

Here are a few photos and videos from my time at Penland, along with some of the vessels I created entirely through wet felting. ( thanks to the expertise of @feltstrong )

Thank you to @instantglassic @crafting_the_future , @penlandschool , for making this experience possible.

A special thank you to @kandyglopez for pushing me to apply, love you girl 🫶🏾

And cheers to all the friends I made along the way. What a gift this experience has been.

What are you doing at Penland?
Sign Painting and Lettering.
What are you going to do with that?

Here’s to the incredible power of place, increasing the number of tools in one’s artistic toolbox and the sheer energy of the co-experienced privilege of time and space created in which it thrives. @penlandschool

“Reproductions? Acid? Fine lines? Danger?!”

One student’s description of intaglio printmaking. (@artisticflacko, seen here bringing one of her drawings to life in the Print Studio.)

Intaglio uses etched or engraved metal plates to create richly detailed prints.

In Kristina Paabus’s workshop, students explored drypoint, copper etching, aquatint, and other intaglio processes while transforming drawings into prints.

Don’t worry—we’re very careful. 😅

Day 15-20: falling

We only just found Batman. And it only just snowed.
Today is Day 42/55. 2 weeks is a short time left to call a place your home, but it’s also still a long vacation.

The Stories We Carry is a group exhibition on view at the Afro American Cultural Center at Yale, featuring Obi Agwam, Tara Fay Coleman, Terrell Halsey, Autumn Nelson, Antonio Scott Nichols, Ana Rucker, Abenda Sohn, Tiara Tiana, and Reggie Woolery; whose works explore personal histories and cultural inheritance across a range of mediums.
These works create a space that holds both personal and collective reflection, tracing what is remembered, what is carried, and what continues to shift across time and place.
As an extension of the exhibition, a tasting menu will be presented, curated around the artworks and the foods the artists grew up eating. This component positions food as an archive of memory, expanding the exhibition’s exploration of how lived experiences are preserved, shared, and transformed across generations.
