Unless you live entirely off Instagram, you’ll have seen Christopher Anderson’s extraordinary photographic essay for Vanity Fair—a body of work that already feels historical.

I initially resisted adding to the commentary. Others were doing it brilliantly and loudly—Seema Rao at @art_lust_, @underthedesknews, @jaytibbitts. But the more I sat with the images, the more it became clear that what’s most interesting here is not that these portraits “expose” their subjects in any crude or gotcha sense. In fact, quite the opposite.

So hi. Welcome to my Ted Talk in two parts.

To be explicit: Anderson was not trying to make anyone look bad. This is his style. He has photographed politicians from both sides of the political aisle this way. The tight crops, the intimate lighting, the unsettling proximity—this is a consistent aesthetic choice, not a political attack. He obviously sees beauty in this closeness. He was not trying to make people look ugly, and that’s not what we should be focusing on either.

These portraits are formally beautiful. Faces are rendered raw, contemporary, and deeply human—flawed in a way that feels deliberate and dignified. They sit squarely within Anderson’s visual language, and within a longer lineage of portraiture that insists on intimacy as a form of truth rather than harm—think @nick_knight In Your Face, or @imagesbyblairecatherine.

If there’s something to talk about here, it’s not mockery or degradation. It’s about what happens when power is photographed without distance and without retouching and is more honest.

Part two coming soon: why this isn’t journalism@and shouldn’t be called that.
