To the Thorough Theta Kappa Chapter, thank you for bringing a young man into your brotherhood and seeing potential in him that he did not yet see in himself. Thank you for every lesson, every conversation, and every experience that helped shape me into a better man. Thank you for the guidance from day one and for always staying connected with me throughout this journey. Your support, accountability, and advice never went unnoticed, and I will always appreciate the role you played in helping me grow.

To my Dean and ADP, thank you for never allowing me to quit. Thank y’all for helping me see the best in situations and always finding a way to put a smile on my face even during difficult times. Thank y’all for giving me the real, even when it was not what I wanted to hear, and for being the kind of big brothers I can always look up to.

To my LBs, thank y’all for always checking up on me and making sure I stay grounded. The bond and memories we built will always mean something to me, and I appreciate having brothers I can always lean on.

To my Neos, no matter where life takes us, the bond we created will always remain. This is only the beginning for all of us. Let’s continue growing this chapter while promoting excellence within ourselves and our brotherhood.

GOMAB! 💙🤘🏼

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” — Jeremiah 29:11

It may not mean nothing to yall, but it means everything to me. I thought as a black man coming from where I come from, that this would be impossible. When I first came to UMES, I was leaving behind an athletic career and track scholarship without knowing that I was more than just an athlete. I was lost, I was confused with the pressure to become a black man of excellence. I struggled but and my journey up until this point has been filled with personal development, leadership, and so many more things that I did not know were waiting for me. One degree, a few organizations, and awards later I am here to say it was not always easy, but it will always be worth it.

To the earlier version of myself, you did it king. You stayed true to the vision and took it further then you even thought was possible! Keep ya chin up and chest out, and continue to chase greatness.

To my village, thank you all for believing in me, supporting me, and loving me along the way. Thank you for the words of wisdom and encouragement. Being a troubled child, I did not know where I was headed, but yall always believed. I am now and always will be forever grateful because I couldn’t be here without you.

As I plan to take over the world, I know that this isn’t the end but the beginning. I have completed the first step of a much bigger journey and only God knows what’s next.

With that being said, on December 13th at 10am I Shymir L. Coakley, will be walking across the stage and officially becoming an Alumnus of Thee University of Maryland, Eastern Shore with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Finance.

The Marathon Continues..
