IBSC XV. Sunnyside Skatepark. MD. 2026/09/06
Bulldog, Linc, Suitland Sue, PJ-B, Crazy Legs, a DL-ed A-A-Ron, Old School Andy, and Goofy-Stance Vance all showed up for a great session at Sunnyside yesterday morning. GS-Vance was doing these killer backside melon early grabs all over the park. He made them look effortless, and although I had not the stones to try one myself as I sit here looking at the photos, I realllllly want to try these next week (if my ass is up to it). Not to be outdone by his youngin, Old School Andy pulled a couple of excellent sweepers in the bowl. Although I would love to try those, I am months away from feeling stable enough to try. I have a feeling that trying those backside melon grabs are gonna lead me to pulled back-muscle city, but I am willing to risk it! Maybe.
I continued to mess around with bowl fly-outs just getting used to them, and although I didn’t land any this week unlike last, I was mostly just trying to feel out the mechanics of it. I even did a powerslide into the parking block (not ON THE PARKING BLOCK MIND YOU) without landing on my ass. Baby steps. Everyone was looking good out there. A-A-Ron was DLed due to getting rear ended just a couple of days prior ending up with a slight concussion and a totaled whip, but he came out to hang and support. Here’s to him getting whole shortly!
Suitland Sue and Crazy Legs BOTH brought some show and tell (have I mentioned how much I love show and tell???) with Sue bringing his first board procured I believe in 1986… a cobalt blue Super Sugar Crisp Lucero. To say that I was over the moon about this board and all its period sticker magnificence would be an understatement. Cobalt blue is of course the best of the colors. Crazy Legs brought the new Gray Matter book by Steve Niles, Brian Walsby, and Monica Richards. Looks great, can’t wait to get my hands on a copy!
Per normal after a couple of hours a few of us retired to the Wawa where we engaged in a bit of ass-sittin’ therapy out front. A local apparently noticed us doing this over the past few weeks and came up to give us props for this in-person, non-screen dictated hangout. Upstanding (sitting) citizens we are.

IBSC XIV. Sunnyside Skatepark. MD. 2026/08/30
Super mild start last Sunday morning… the weather gave a slight preview of autumn in the early hours but quickly came back to our Hellish Late Summer Reality. Roll call for the session was Bulldog, PJ-B, Suitland Sue, Crazy Legs, Linc, and yours truly. A bit of pre-game hot takes had been started via text the day prior, and a few of us came ready to verbally scrap or at least lay bare some lukewarm-to-hot takes on a few pillars of early to mid-80s skate rock/hardcore. The idiomatic marketing campaign of “hey you got your chocolate in my peanut butter!” and “you got your peanut butter in my chocolate!” from early 80s Reese’s was the theme du jour but with funk/punk. Most agreed that the Big Boys and Minutemen have great songs in their respective oeuvres, but pseudo-factions developed around whether their proper albums were lacking or at least a puzzle to figure out. At least one pearl-clutcher caught “the vapors” at these assertions and needed to be cajoled with cold compresses and smelling salts back to consciousness. Point counterpoint continued until the Peppers came up. Without going into the weeds let’s just say that something closer to consensus was reached at this point.
Charli XCX, whom was raised as a sort of palette cleanser a few weeks ago when we got a little too close to the sun in one of our chugga-chugga hardcore discussions, was addressed once more. Music Fashion Film has been listened to and enjoyed by a fair number of these here “skate punks”. It was a nice pivot from the not-quite iconoclastic discussion on the Big Boys and Minutemen.
Photos are a bit slim this week as I made a decision to “skate more” and it seems between this and the lively discussion from above I was a bit derelict in my photo responsibility. Apologies especially to PJ-B and Bulldog whom I barely captured on boards.
Most everything else is fuzzy for me as the day count has grown since this session, and only I am to blame for that dear reader. This weekend’s summary should *hopefully* be out in a more timely fashion.

oacoustics x Generative Art: Voicing the Wren 🔬🎙️✨
Bioacoustics meets generative art to render the invisible. Perched on a mossy branch, a tiny Eurasian Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) delivers an explosive, high-pressure song. Above it, TouchDesigner translates this acoustic power in real time using my custom process, Spread Acoustic. The patch is visible at the bottom: audio feeds in on the left to drive the particle fountain on the right. Amplitude governs eruption velocity, while rapid frequency trills shape trajectories and color accents sampled directly from the moss, bark, and sky. Part of the series La Science Musicale.

Perché sur une branche moussue, un minuscule Troglodyte mignon (Troglodytes troglodytes) déploie un chant d'une puissance phénoménale. IBSC XIII. Sunnyside Skatepark. MD. 2026/08/23
I WOULD LIKE TO REPORT AN ASSAULT!
Back to the old haunt this AM and I got there about 15 minutes earlier than usual, and sure enough Bulldog was already there. 8:15am and he had already gotten his car washed and did some Home Depot “errands”. The man is a machine, I says. Sue from Suitland and PJ-B rounded out today’s pack just a short time later and it was on. Show and tell was in order, your faithful narrator decided… so the old board bag was retrieved from the attic. A fun discussion was had around the Hawk, McGill, Mountain, Jinx, and Neil Blender decks with nostalgic musings on everyone’s first board. Mine was the Tony Hawk in blue and neon pink colorway. I will let you, my favorite readers, decide who to attach to a rainbow colorway Mark “Gator” Rogowski, John Lucero’s first deck (the one that he lifted the dungeon graphic for from a box of Super Sugar Crisp), and the Santa Cruz Jammer.
I found it a bit weird that PJ-B kept checking the wind’s speed and direction, questioning if I would be putting on my right kneepad (left one was on, I don’t know why I was only wearing one) and what I now understand to be arc-trajectory calculations. And then it happened… direct missile (see pic) to the right knee which stunned me slightly, but I was able to parry the right haymaker that was then headed to my skull. Thankfully Bulldog was there to relieve PJ-B of the shiv he had hidden in his left sock. Don’t worry all, we talked it out, and I apologized for not knowing the Jammer (hint), which caused for this unhinged violence. You live and learn I suppose.
Susan had to leave early for Continuals practice, and not long after PJ-B to open his record and book store (Art Sound Language) so Bulldog and I decided to retire to the Wawa. Bulldog fired up his PowerPoint presentation on all the now dead skate-able backyard pools in the DMV over the last 20 years, and as he was concluding his Ted talk, Linc arrived. Linc has accompanied Bulldog on many a secret pool mission and the two had some great stories about Catonsville’s Satan’s Bathtub. A more apt name for that pool does not exist! Great session.

DJ Scotty Don’t and myself (DJ Leave Home) will be spinning the wheels of steel (or thermoplastic?) tomorrow evening (Friday 21-Aug) from 6-8pm at @artsoundlanguage records and books. We heartedly invite you to bring your ears and opinions. Also bring beverages or drink mine. The picture carousel offers hints and misdirections at what I will be playing. All the hits, according to me. Hope to see some familiar faces, and a few unfamiliar maybe?

It started with an idea…take elements of a yoga studio, a theatre troupe, and community activism, weave them together with the seasons, and create something that belonged to the neighborhood.

With inspiration from too many to name individually and a beautiful design by @jenpapedesigns…we collaged it all together and brought Yoga On Connecticut to life.

We owe a huge debt of gratitude to @vannessmainst (❤️❤️ Gloria, Erin & Tracy) for embracing this vision and opening up the space at 4340 Connecticut Ave and Forest Hills Park to support @nwcommunityfood through movement.

And then the community showed up.

Students became regulars. Neighbors became friends. A gathering became a rhythm. Week by week we collectively created a soft space in an otherwise dense world…a place to move, breath, connect and come together.

We also brought music into the mix with a live DJ class hosted @artsoundlanguage and class accompanied by the ethereal sounds of @yare_harp 🪉

Together we raised $1,500 for @nwcommunityfood

To every student who showed up, supported the vision, and helped make this more than an idea…Thank You ❤️🫶

And to the teachers who generously gave their time, energy, and practice to help bring this experiment to life:
@highkiliving @drvallis @donurasana @cope.yoga @helenarowe @lauraadowner @ganderson888 @sternesm (plus our friends not on Instagram)

We are grateful for every one of you. This is just the beginning. See you in September. The Show Goes On. 🫶🙏🧿
