There was a time when this lamp was more than just a source of light it was the heartbeat of our evenings. As darkness fell, everyone gathered around it, waiting eagerly for the familiar voice on the radio to bring us the night news. Stories were shared, laughter echoed, lessons were learned, and precious memories were made under its warm glow. It wasn’t just a lamp; it was a symbol of togetherness, hope, and simpler times. Those moments may be gone, but the memories it illuminated will forever remain bright in our hearts.

'Nigerian Modernism: Art and Independence explores the rise of modern art in Nigeria before and after national independence. The artists who advocated for political and creative freedom during the 20th century.
Nigerian modernism was not a single movement, but a variety of responses to the country's shifting cultural and political identity. Nigeria was established as a British colony in 1914. By this time, prosperous African kingdoms and societies had been profoundly altered by decades of military campaigns and colonial exploitation. Under British rule, artists continued to find innovative ways to express their own ideas, histories and imaginations. They embraced and rebelled against the colonial education system. Some created their own art societies and curriculums, while others travelled abroad in search of professional opportunities.
Throughout Nigeria, artists were influenced by Pan-Africanism and European art forms. They also drew inspiration from local cultures and religious traditions from the region's many ethnic groups - including Fulani-Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba people -met Christian and Islamic practices.
In 1960, Nigeria gained independence from Britain. New artistic and literary clubs were founded across the country, providing spaces to explore the intersections of art, poetry and performance. During this period, Nigeria experienced an economic boom, but it also faced a devastating civil war. In the aftermath, artists established new visual languages in their search for a new postcolonial identity.'

Title: Resonance of Ancestral Echoes.

Dimension: 3ft by 3ft.

Medium: Mixed Media.

Year: 2026.

Description:
This visually compelling composition presents three male figures engaged in musical expression, their instruments symbolizing voice, identity, and cultural memory. The richly textured, mosaic-like surface creates a rhythmic visual language, reflecting both sound and the intricacy of indigenous craftsmanship.
A seamless gradient of warm to cool tones enhances the emotional depth of the work, suggesting a journey from vitality to introspection. Circular motifs within the figures evoke themes of continuity, wholeness, and spiritual connection, grounding the composition in cultural and symbolic significance.
Celebrating unity, heritage, and collective identity, the painting transforms abstraction into a powerful narrative—where rhythm, tradition, and visual harmony converge.

Inspiration:
African Musical Heritage & Oral Tradition.
At its core, the presence of three musicians evokes the profound legacy of African musical tradition—where sound transcends entertainment to become a living archive of history, storytelling, and shared identity. The stylized instruments and poised, performative figures recall the spirit of traditional ensembles, suggestive of ceremonial gatherings and communal celebrations. Within this space, rhythm emerges as a unifying force, bridging generations and carrying the voice of culture across time.

I did this painting of LADI KWALI last year 2025

Ladi Kwali or Ladi Dosei Kwali, OON NNOM, MBE was a Nigerian potter, ceramicist and educator. Ladi Kwali was born in the village of Kwali in the Gwari region of Northern Nigeria, where pottery was an indigenous occupation among women.

N20 note
The N20 note is the first note to have the portrait of a national hero in the person of the late Head of State - General Murtala Mohammed (1938-1976). The back has the portrait of Ladi Kwali, a famous potter. On February 28 2007, the N20 Naira note was redesigned and issued in polymer substrate.
