tierra is the fourth iteration of the Clay Biennial at Craft Contemporary @craftcontemporary in Los Angeles
May 31, 2026 — October 25, 2026

tierra is organized by lead curator Andres Payan Estrada @andres_payan , with a curatorial committee formed by Frida Cano @arttextum , Joel Garcia @rageone , Mercedes Dorame @mercedes.dorame and Cannupa Hanska Luger @cannupahanska
tierra is created in collaboration with the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts. @el.rubincenter

Part of Craft Contemporary’s Clay Biennial series, tierra marks a reconsideration of the biennial’s conceptual and material parameters. This iteration expands its focus beyond ceramic and clay as a singular medium to encompass broader practices grounded in land and earth. Across the practices presented, earth-based materials appear not only as matter but as carriers of relation that are marked by touch, shaped by labor, and mended through care. These materials are approached as holders of cultural memory and as sites where knowledge is formed through making, tending, and embodied practice. Rather than centering medium alone, the exhibition attends to the ways artists work with and through earth, not only as a material, but as a relation.

tierra foregrounds the work of Latinx, Indigenous, and Black artists whose practices reflect emotional, familial, and cultural connections to land. Within these works, earth often appears as ancestor, relative, or teacher; a deep-time relationship shaped through kinship rather than ownership. Lineages emerge through matriarchal and ancestral histories, where making stewards knowledge across generations and geographies.

Exhibition artists include Jackie Amézquita, Natalia Arbelaez, Syd Carpenter, Teresa Castro, Armando Guadalupe Cortés, rafa esparza, Miguel Fernández de Castro, Adebunmi Gbadebo, Karla García, Christine Howard Sandoval, Joanna Keane Lopez, Ruben Olguin, Iman Person, Jeri Redcorn

Across the street from LACMA is another excellent museum - the Craft Contemporary @craftcontemporary . Senior Curator Frida Cano @arttextum discusses their current exhibition Material Curiosity by Design. Spanning across all three floors, the show highlights the prolific careers of midcentury designers Evelyn and Jerome Ackerman in dialogue with select works by three contemporary artists. Celebrated for their vibrant contributions to California modernism, the Ackermans partnered for decades on bold designs that brought warmth to midcentury interiors. Showcasing their ceramic, textile, mosaic, wood, and metal creations alongside new works by Porfirio Gutiérrez, Jolie Ngo, and Vince Skelly, this exhibition sparks a dynamic conversation about materials, innovation, and craft.

The second floor features works by Vince Skelly, who transforms the gallery space into a recreation of his studio where wood-working tools, sketches, and wood works are on display. Vince Skelly – Source Material is an experimental approach to the artist’s creative process in which visitors will gain insights into how he explores the intersection of form, function, and collective memory through his sculptural practice. Through the power of craft, the Maker-in-Residence program is designed to invite the public to engage directly with the process of making, offering a rare opportunity to witness and participate in contemporary craft in action.
On view through May

We’re excited to share the artists participating in tierra, the fourth iteration of Craft Contemporary’s Clay Biennial, opening May 30 and on view May 31 through October 25, 2027.

Bringing together 20 practitioners, tierra expands beyond clay as a singular medium to encompass broader approaches grounded in land and earth. Across the work presented, earth-based materials appear not only as matter, but as carriers of relation, marked by touch, shaped by labor, and mended through care.

The exhibition includes 14 participating artists whose work engages material as a holder of cultural memory and as a site where knowledge takes shape through making, tending, and embodied practice. It also includes six contributing artists whose text-based works are interwoven throughout the exhibition, expanding how knowledge is held and carried across forms.

The exhibition is organized by a curatorial committee led by Andres Payan Estrada @andres_payan ,and includes Frida Cano @arttextum , Joel Garcia @rageone , Mercedes Dorame @mercedes.dorame ,and Cannupa Hanska Luger @cannupahanska. The invited artists emerged through ongoing dialogue with the committee, forming a constellation of work that positions material as a holder of cultural memory, and as a site where knowledge is shaped through making, tending, and care.

tierra is co-organized in collaboration with the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts.

2026 CLAY BIENNIAL CURATORIAL COMMITTEE

We are pleased to announce the curatorial committee for the 2026 Clay Biennial, tierra. Part of Craft Contemporary’s ongoing Clay Biennial series, this iteration unfolds through layered understandings of the word tierra.

tierra as ground beneath the body, as homeland carried across distance, and as a living archive shaped by labor, violence, and care. Expanding beyond clay toward practices grounded in land and earth, the exhibition approaches earth-based materials as carriers of relation: touched, altered, remembered, and tended. tierra foregrounds Latinx, Indigenous, and Black artists whose practices reflect emotional, familial, and cultural connections to land.
