Story time. When I was a kid, my mom had my brother record the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS on VHS. I had seen Wayne’s World earlier that year, but that tape was my real introduction to @officialqueenmusic and @freddiemercury.

Approximately one billion people watched that concert on TV. @davidbowie performed with @officialannielennox and Axel Rose sang Bohemian Rhapsody with @eltonjohn and the remaining members of Queen. That was a real thing that happened.

After that, my brother and I took turns buying Mom different Queen CD’s that she could listen to in the car. It didn’t hurt that I was often in the car with her (our singing was more Wayne and Garth than Axel and Sir Elton).

Anyway, that’s how I found my favourite band and one of my favourite muses.

That concert was also the first time I can remember hearing about HIV/AIDS. The living members of Queen and their manager, Jim Beach, used the event and its proceeds to launch The Mercury Phoenix Trust and fight that health crisis worldwide. There was and still is a lot of terrible stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. That crisis isn't over, but I’d like to think that the end is a little closer thanks to that concert on April 20, 1992.

There are a lot of ways to support them The Mercury Phoenix Trust. You can check them out at @mptofficial or mercuryphoenixtrust.com for more information.
