Video Storytelling for Gongi (공기) | Smart and supportive asthma preventer inhaler
-
We worked a lot in @figma to create moodboards and a storyboard that constantly changed during our process. It was fun trying out new but also existing stuff and push it a little bit further :)

A while ago, the @core77 Design Awards were announced, and a little late to the party, I’m excited to share that “Gongi” has been selected as a Runner-Up in the Medical & Healthcare Category! :)
-
Gongi is a smart, guided inhalation system designed to teach and reinforce correct inhalation techniques through calm, real-time feedback. Consisting of a warm, playfully designed docking station paired with an inhaler, Gongi moves away from the cold, clinical aesthetic typically associated with medical devices. Instead of relying on screens, complex digital interfaces, or post-use app analysis, Gongi uses an intentionally low-stimulus combination of light and sound cues.
-
A big shoutout to the amazing team, Artyom Shpagin and Zeynep Emiroğlu, for making this project possible!
-
If you want to learn more, feel free to take a look at the @core77 website :)

Some Ai explorations, screens from behind the research process and first prototypes of gongi :)
-
The videos are created in @vizcom_ and @googlegemini. These are created in minutes, not with the best outcome, but what ones was a 5 second basic Keyshot animation could now be a 5 second prompt.
-
We deply researched how the user interacts with gongi and how users would react to different sounds and light interaction that guide them through the process.
-
In the last phases we used the „Wizard of Oz“ method to created simple prototypes to play our ideas through and test them with real users.

Student designers win UX Design Award for empowering children with asthma 👧💨

We are proud to celebrate a student-led project from UID that has received a UX Design Award for outstanding user experience.

Gongi is a smart and supportive asthma preventer designed to help children use their inhalers correctly and confidently. By combining sound and light in a playful and reassuring way, Gongi turns a medical routine into a moment of comfort and empowerment for both children and their caregivers.

The jury praised Gongi as “a warm, playful solution that uses light and sound to guide kids while they prepare and take their medication,” highlighting its potential to reduce anxiety, improve treatment outcomes, and support families through better communication and tracking.

The student team approached the challenge with a strong focus on emotional design. “Our goal was to create a calm and intuitive experience that feels like a friendly companion,” they shared. “We wanted to avoid sounding like a teacher or doctor, and instead build trust through gentle, character-driven feedback.”

Gongi was created by Jakob Höxtermann, Zeynep Emiroǧlu, and Artyom Shpagin.

Proud to say that we won the @uxd.awards in the new talents category! A big shout out to @artyomshpagin and @potatobender for this great project at @umeainstituteofdesign.
-
94% of asthma patients use their preventer inhaler device not correctly (National Institutes of Health).
„gongi“ supports the users when the medicine has to be taken daily to prevent an asthma attack. Through visuals and sounds the preventer, together with the docking station, is guiding the user intuitive and reminding through the process.

😅⚽ Zero to ten? Time to crawl again.

At UID, if you lose a foosball match 0–10, there’s only one way out: sign your name under the table and crawl out in style. A tradition that turns defeat into a badge of honour (and a lot of laughs).
