Every single time the doors and the blinds closed, the horror took over the room.

Meanwhile, the parents thought their kids were being safely treated.

But what they didn't know is that a man was playing God with their children.

That’s the horror in the tragedy of Bruce Reimer.

After a medical accident, Bruce’s parents sought help.

John Money, one of the most influential sexuality researchers of the time, saw in that boy and his twin brother a unique opportunity to prove his theory: nurture speaks louder than nature.

One would be raised as a boy. The other, as a girl -but in secret.

Bruce was given a new name: Brenda.

And his parents received an order: never, ever tell the truth.

For years, Money sold the case to the world as a success.

Behind that “success,” an entire family lived the consequences.

Now, this story finally arrives in theaters.

Two desperate parents.

A son of barely two years old.

And a man who promised to have the answer.

After a surgical accident, Bruce Reimer’s family was looking for a way to save the boy’s future.

That’s when they found John Money.

Psychologist at Johns Hopkins University, Money argued that gender identity could be shaped by nurture, regardless of biological sex.

His proposal was radical.

To subject Bruce to medical procedures, raise him as a girl and hide from him the truth about his own birth.

For the parents, that seemed like a way out.

For Money, it was the opportunity to prove a theory that could consolidate his career.

Bruce got a new name.

Brenda.

For years, the case was presented to the world as a success.

But while John Money defended his version in articles and conferences, a child tried to survive the consequences of a decision he could never make.

The parents wanted to save their son.

And they trusted a man who needed to save his own theory.

What is a woman?

In 1990, philosopher Judith Butler published Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity, a work that would become one of the main references in contemporary studies on gender identity.

In the book, Butler questions the idea that the categories of male and female are determined exclusively by biology.

Her theory of performativity proposes that gender is constituted through the repetition of behaviors, norms, and social practices.

Butler's thought engages with authors such as Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, and Jacques Derrida.

But the discussion about the relationship between biological sex, upbringing, and identity had already occupied researchers decades earlier.

Among them was John Money.

In the 1960s, the psychologist contributed to the dissemination of the concepts of gender role and identity, defending the importance of social factors and upbringing in child development.

His ideas would be put to the test in one of the most controversial cases in the history of psychology.

In 1966, Bruce Reimer suffered a serious accident during surgery.

His parents sought out Money, who recommended raising the boy as a girl, under the name Brenda.

Bruce had an identical twin brother, Brian.

The difference in their upbringing would be used by the researcher to support his hypotheses.

For years, Money presented the case as a success.

However, Bruce's subsequent trajectory contradicted his conclusions.

He was sold as a success, but reality spoke otherwise.

In the 1960s, a boy from Winnipeg, Canada, was given a lie as a life. The whole reason they did that was to "protect" him from a harsh truth.

He had suffered a failed medical procedure, and the parents were convinced by psychologist John Money to raise him as someone else entirely.

Behind this story, Money was seeking to prove his point -that gender could be molded from scratch.

For years, his experiment on the little boy was sold as a success, but it was built on a pile of lies.

No one in Hollywood dared to tell this story. So we did.

A Boy Named Brenda: a true story based on a lie, is coming soon.

Somehow, she always knew...

In 1965, in Canada, two identical twin brothers were born: Bruce and Brian Reimer.

At 8 months, Bruce suffered an accident during a circumcision that destroyed his penis.

Not knowing what to do, his parents sought help.

And they found John Money, one of the best-known sexuality researchers of the time.

Money saw in that case something he would hardly find again:

Two identical twin brothers.

One could be raised as a boy. And the other, like a girl.

Bruce went through new interventions. He got new (girl’s) clothes. A new identity. And a new name:

Brenda.

For years, John Money presented the case as a success.

But there was a problem: Brenda wasn’t Brenda.

And she always knew something wasn't right. Until, at 14, she was finally told the truth.

A true story based on a lie.

Coming soon.

The horror in this story is that it really happened.

In the late 60s, a charismatic psychologist called John Money was obsessed with proving that gender was not a biological matter, but a matter of environment, education and construction.

It was like this, with a little bit of theory and a lot of fame and prestige, that he convinced a desperate Canadian family to trust their 2-year-old son to one of the cruelest and most controversial experiments in all of history.

Money presents a radical solution: to secretly raise a boy as a girl.

"Dress a boy as a girl. Treat the boy as a girl. Make him think he is a girl, and that's it –he will be a girl."

A true story based on a lie.

Imagine a world without lies. Seems nice, doesn't it?

Until you realize that secrets would also impossible in this world. Secrets from the government, from people you don't like... but also your secrets.

Everything would be out in the open.

In this world, John Money wouldn't have gotten so far.

Oh, what did he do?

Well... let's say he believed telling the truth was not a good idea. So he built a child's entire life on that —and never told him.
