Recently, our Volunteer and Marine Debris Coordinator, Emily Braud, hosted the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for their annual community service event, “Clean the Coast.”

The day began at Elmer’s Island Wildlife Refuge, where students removed over 1,500 pounds of trash and marine debris from the beach, including an abandoned tent, a yellow pipeline marker, tarps, boat pieces, and more. Afterward, the group enjoyed lunch at the Grand Isle Research Lab and heard presentations from Charles Alexander with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF), BTNEP, and Jean Landry with The Nature Conservancy (TNC). The event concluded with a visit to Lafitte Woods Preserve in Grand Isle, where students trimmed overgrowth and removed invasive species.

Thank you to these students and their advisor for dedicating their time and effort to help protect our estuary!

The UL Lafayette College of Engineering broke ground Tuesday for its new Engineering Student-Centered Collaborative Building. Once completed, the nearly 65,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will be home to the newly established Engineering Center of Excellence, or ECoE (pronounced “echo”).

Designed to foster teamwork, creativity and student success, the building and accompanying ECoE “are significant milestones in our commitment to reimagining and advancing engineering education, research and workforce development,” said Dr. Joseph Savoie, UL Lafayette president.
