For spencersfilmdiaries, photographing music events is about looking beyond the stage.

Their ongoing film photography project documents music events and rave culture from within the crowd, focusing on the small interactions and moments that shape a night — people making space for one another, spontaneous friendships, movement, expressions and the atmosphere created by everyone in the room.

This particular series was photographed at Ascend’s event in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast on September 19, as Australia moved toward the beginning of its summer event and festival season.

The evening carried a sense of anticipation and excitement, and the photographs capture that feeling through the people experiencing it rather than simply documenting the event itself.

Working on film encourages a slower and more deliberate way of looking. Grain, blur and movement become part of the visual language, allowing the photographs to preserve the feeling of a night rather than simply provide a clean record of what happened.
