This is a very significant snake!
At the begining of last summer, @bush_cow and I were driving through Wadi Wuriyah just before dawn (thank you @fujenvironment, @nasserobeidat and @altafhabib11 for that privilege). Through the window, Theo spotted a rapidly drying pool full of fish fighting for space, with a viper sliding up to it.
We leaped out of the car and managed to document the snake feasting on a fishy breakfast buffet. We got some really cool photos and videos, and I uploaded them to @inaturalistorg . Snake experts around the world started to see the observation and began excitedly commenting that this was a very rare sighting. My post was even noticed and chosen by the iNaturalist team as the global observation of the day! People started suggesting that we formally write up the discovery (I promptly delegated this to Theo) - and over a year later that research paper has been published and the study was noticed by Nat Geo!

Most snake diet info is patchy or based on captive studies. Wild sightings are rare, so every observation counts.Sometimes local knowledge or even an Instagram post leads to discoveries that formal studies miss. Citizen science means we can catch those regional, seasonal, or just plain weird dietary behaviours that would slip through the cracks otherwise.

If you want to make a difference, get out there—take photos, make notes, and upload your wildlife encounters to platforms like @inaturalistorg You never know what might turn out to be a rare piece of the puzzle.
