One thing I keep coming back to in this season of motherhood post-infertility is that any other time, it wouldn’t have been HIM. my Cohen Thomas. We waited so long for him. If things had gone according to my plans, I’d have a 10 year old. A different little boy entirely or maybe even a little girl. I wouldn’t have been the mother I get to be to him. I wouldn’t have healed. I wouldn’t have been able to protect him like I’m equipped to do now. Even two years ago, as ready as my heart was, God knew it wasn’t time.

It’s easy to say from this side, sure. I’m holding my miracle in my arms this Mother’s Day week and that’s a blessing that I can’t even fully grasp even with him here and looking in my eyes. But the one thing I truly wish I could’ve understood in the wait is... it had to be him. The years, the pain, the emptiness— they were all worth it. I knew it would be worth it to become a mother if I ever was so lucky, but I didn’t realize that being HIS mom would make me thank God endlessly for the wait. Biologically, spiritually, emotionally. It all lined up to bring us this beautiful little boy. I can’t imagine my life without him. I felt his absence even before I knew who he was, and being his mama feels like one continual “oh, there you are” dream come true.

As an incredibly sentimental person, on top of being 33 weeks pregnant, all the emotions are starting to hit. One of my best friends joked with me the other day when I asked if she wanted to go eat at our favorite pizza spot “one last time before Cohen” that I acted like I’m not going to exist anymore or that I’ll never leave the house once he’s here. We laughed because I am prone to being dramatic, but the more I’ve thought about it, I realized I am saying goodbye to a different lifetime.

My whole life I’ve waited for him. I dreamed about him. I prayed for him. I wished for him. I truly didn’t think I’d get to have him. There were always these two paths, alternate universes, two halves of my heart. I referenced that a lot to the people closest to me during our infertility journey, saying “If I could just know which way life would go, if we will have a child or not, I could find peace.”

In the meantime I tried my best to live in the present. Everything that came before him was beautiful and meaningful and special. I got to go to college, I got eleven years to fortify my marriage with Beau, I got to travel extensively, build and pour 100% into a business from the ground up, work with my best friends, make my own plans and schedule every day, be spontaneous, push my body to its limits, say yes to everything and everyone, heal a lot of past trauma, and live for me...

Now it will never be the same, and I am so thankful. It’s a change that everyone walks through in becoming a mother, often described as mourning your past self or life. Everything is changing, but I welcome it with open arms.

As I prepare to meet and dedicate myself to this little boy I never thought I’d get to hold, I’m kissing my first 30 years goodbye happily and profusely thanking the young woman who stayed strong enough to see this new and long-awaited chapter and everyone who loved and lifted us up over the years.

I know the days will be long and nothing can fully prepare me for this journey, but it’s all for him now and I’ve never been more ready for anything.
