🥀
(i like to think)
the county,
affectionately called
by the place he dreamed after,
grew to love,
and inherited by
the sweat and tears
of his blood relatives,
because everything
and everyone is of
reputation in fair verona
(where we no longer
in 2 hours traffic
lay our seen and unseen
blessings.)
when he told
his mother’s mother
of his new title,
she reminded him of how
much he feared
just leaving the state,
of how he wailed when his eyes
set sights on birds,
who called friendly songs.
or, she’d laugh,
when he could finally
string together words,
and though he bit his
tongue, or gnawed his thumb
just to stop the noise
between his ears
for an easier passage
(word by word),
he spake the sunshine fair.
he smelled the beautiful flowers,
dedicating his life to
being a man of wax
and would polish every surface
he touched,
every mind he wandered through,
wonder at his coat tails.
and when he was of age
to learn of love,
his armor of petals
could not withstand
his berating peers.
so he was chased out
of most rooms
where barbaric fists
and entitled tongues
tread over his soft-browed,
eagle-eyed countenance.
if he could not win
a maiden for love,
and the world told him
he would never be suited
for experiencing joy
with his closest bedfellows,
he would focus
on the work.
and so he did.
and so, he did.
and so,
the strife of their streets,
harmless as it might,
bereaved him to know
that two families,
with great enmity,
could be united
where his jurisdiction
could support any
reason(s) while their
dignities did not
carry likewise weight
in their husbandries.
though he presented
transaction,
he did feel
and fall
and when you know, you know.
and though he had seen the world
many years before her life
had succeeded,
he was willing to wait.
and be a part of
the famiglia.
but he was reminded,
in the waves of doubt
and uncertainty,
that his mother’s mother
once too
was a maid.
and held fear,
uncertainty,
and doubt.
so as he set flowers
for his fallen bride,
he breathed and sighed.
and as he bled at her tomb,
he breathed and sighed.
and as he felt the heat
turn away,
mother’s mother
in the end
set her hand on his side,
and her smile greeted him,
blooming again.
