Happy DLD Awareness Day! 💜 🧠 🗣️

Today, we’re raising awareness about Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people understand and use language, which impacts learning. DLD can affect both children and adults.

Did you know? Bilingualism does not cause DLD and children with DLD can absolutely become bilingual 🧠 You don’t have to choose one language over another! There’s no need to take away a child’s home language to focus on English. Supporting both languages helps children build on their language knowledge, strengthen their communication skills, and maintain meaningful connections with their family, culture, and community. 🫶🏽

Major shoutout to our stellar BABEL undergraduate researcher @marianna.g.martinez for her awesome research and resource ✨🤩👏🏽

Join us in spreading awareness and promoting acceptance and inclusion for all! Every voice matters 💜

Thinking about a career that changes lives every day? Speech-Language Pathologists help people communicate, learn, and connect with the world. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, SLP jobs are projected to grow 17% from 2025–2035, much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 12,500 openings each year.

Becoming an SLP may be for you! Do your research and really think about what you want your future career to look like.

🎨 PUENTE, through the eyes of our students!

What does PUENTE mean to the students helping us build it? We asked our amazing students at Sunnyside High School @sunnysideedpro to show us, and they brought their creativity to life through hand-drawn illustrations and digital designs! 🤩

Each piece offers a different perspective on PUENTE and what it means to create pathways into higher education, explore new possibilities, and see the connections of the speech, language, and hearing sciences in their own lives 🗣️

One of our favorite parts of this work is seeing students take ownership of the program and make it their own. Their ideas, creativity, and perspectives are helping shape what PUENTE is becoming, and we couldn’t be prouder to share their work! Way to go, blue devils!! 💙

Swipe through to see PUENTE through their eyes 👏🏽

🧠 Can you actually picture things in your mind's eye?

I can't. And for most of my life, I didn't realize other people could.

I have aphantasia, which means I can't voluntarily create mental pictures. I know what my family looks like, I can describe my childhood home, and I can think about familiar places. I just don't see them in my mind.

As an SLP who has worked in brain injury rehabilitation, I've become especially interested in how our brains create mental images, and what happens when that ability is lost.

A 2026 study published in Cortex examined 12 reported cases of people who developed aphantasia after brain damage.

The researchers found that the damaged areas weren't all in the same location. But when they used brain connectivity data from 1,000 healthy participants, all 12 lesion locations were estimated to be functionally connected to a brain area involved in visual mental imagery.

That suggests this ability depends on a connected brain network, not just one isolated area.

One clinical takeaway I find especially interesting: We sometimes ask patients to visualize something during memory or cognitive activities, without knowing whether they actually experience mental images.

It may be worth asking first :)

Of course, this study examined acquired aphantasia, not lifelong aphantasia like mine. It also didn't test therapy techniques. These findings help us better understand the brain systems involved in mental imagery, but they don't tell us which rehabilitation strategies work best.

Comprehensive cleft care goes beyond surgery.

For children with clefts, access to ear and hearing care is an important part of supporting communication, learning, and participation in everyday life.

Through Smile Train-supported programs, providers are expanding access to hearing assessments and ear tube surgeries while strengthening locally led cleft care systems.

Watch the video to learn more about the role of hearing care in comprehensive cleft care.
