Hey LA, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, please don’t sleep on Jungle who are passing through SoCal. I’ve been in love with this collective since they launched out of a bedroom in 2013. They’re one of my absolute favorite bands to see live, bringing incredible instrumentation. With every song, it’s hard to place what decade you’re in while grooving to it. In 2015 they were the perfect opener for that otherworldly Underworld show.

#FBF Back in 2024, I originally didn’t think I was going to be in town for their Bowl show. When I found myself in LA, I wanted to join some good friends celebrating their birthdays up at the top of the Bowl. Couldn’t find a seat near them, so I found a cheapie in the Pool. (Pro Tip: The Pool is THE WAY to Bowl!) Happy Weekend! 🚀🌞

Lucky Lu is slowly rolling out in theaters in 2026. First up is France, opening TODAY! It’s retitled “Les Lumière de New York” for just France. Friends over there, go see our film on the big screen in beautiful 16mm @kodak_shootfilm 🫶

For the entire @luckylufilm production, we were running away from constant bad weather (that would ruin continuity). On the last day of filming, we moved up call time to 4am to sneak in as much shooting time as possible before a giant afternoon snowstorm. We kept shooting and shooting, and the snow kept delaying, hour by hour. And we snuck in a full day, getting all our final shots. Minutes after we called wrap, snowflakes started falling. This video was a couple hours later, a magical moment of this beautiful city saying “you’re done now”. A surreal 2025 memory, among many others.

For the longest time in Lloyd Lee Choi’s Lucky Lu, I waited for two things: when Lu would finally turn lucky, and when New York would reveal its postcard sheen. In this bruising immigrant drama, neither arrives.

The film captures two nightmarish days in the life of deliveryman Lu as his wife and daughter travel from China to join him. In that narrow window, he loses the bike that keeps him employed and the rental apartment meant to house his family. The narrative becomes a breathless chase as Lu scrambles to gather money by any means necessary.

It is striking that this story unfolds in New York. Lucky Lu may be the least glamorous NYC-set film in recent memory. Centred on Chinese blue-collar workers, the American Dream is absent, and so is luck.

Choi lays bare a world where immigrants will do anything to survive, whether begging, stealing, or something in between. Yet the film preserves small pockets of decency. The unspoken camaraderie between Lu and his network hints at a stubborn human goodness that refuses to die.

The film hits its emotional stride once Lu’s family arrives. His day out with his perceptive young daughter is its highlight. Yaya’s intuitive gaze forces us to wonder how a father processes looking like a failure in his child’s eyes. Lucky Lu quietly addresses questions around fatherhood, family, and fragile support structures within suburban NYC’s Chinese community.

Chang Chen anchors the film with a severely affecting performance. Carabelle Manna Wei, as Yaya, is a revelation whose quiet reactions elevate every scene.

Choi completes this neorealist fable with a tense, evocative score. The filmmaker packs enough dramatic possibilities to explore how the definition of a big city might vary for many. Lucky Lu closes on a poignant, stoic note, reminding us that survival itself can be an act of defiance.

@luckylufilm 30th BIFF OPEN TALK

Chang Chen said, “To be honest, the story in the movie is quite ordinary. It’s about how one person lives for 24 hours.” He added, “But even in that short time, you can see the character’s personality well. The character I played, Lu, is a very charming character with an Asian spirit.”

He continued, “The title of the movie is ‘Lucky Lu’, but when I read the script, I immediately knew why Lu was unlucky. That’s one of the reasons I loved the script.” He also mentioned, “The director told me that the movie would be filmed on film, which was another reason to do the project. I wanted to capture the best and most perfect moments on film.”

Director Lloyd said that from the beginning, he had Chang Chen in mind for the role of Lu. He mentioned, “I’ve grown up watching his work with great respect. Despite this being my debut film, he showed me trust and faith, which meant a lot to the entire film team.”

He continued, “When I saw Chen, I thought he was too handsome, so our challenge was to make him blend in with the crowd in New York. But he brought a new nuance to the character and delivered a performance that touched the audience’s hearts. It was a beautiful experience.”

Director Lloyd shared an anecdote that showed how immersed Chang Chen was in his role during filming in New York. He said, “We were filming a scene where Chen’s character was running through the crowd in a New York street. A real delivery person saw him running and actually came up to check if he was okay. It was a touching moment. We knew we had succeeded in making Chang Chen blend in like a real delivery person in the city.”

As the director mentioned, “Lucky Lu” was filmed in New York, and the shoot wasn’t easy. Producer Nina Yang recalled, “From the early stages of production, we thought it was crucial to assemble the best team to bring the director’s vision to life. We put together a team with incredible experience, and everyone approached the project with love and respect. We filmed 22 days at 50 different locations, and because of the love and respect, it didn’t feel like work.”
