Love is the answer

Shaun is one of our heroes. He’s a wild mix of Thai, Irish and NT, all rolled into this big, beautiful teddy bear of a human.

Our first contact was about a year after SD launched. I was scrolling through Instagram, engaging with people, when I saw this dude sitting on a car with a couple of logs. I sent him a message on the photo, we ended up having a call, talked about what makes him happy, and eventually shared him on the socials. With this pic here!

Two years later, I asked him, “Want to open up a shop? Want to ride around Byron naked on a pushy, handing out newspapers for the shop space?” The rest is history.

He came to Byron to open up our fulfilment and the shop, and along the way we shared stories, surfs, laughs and a whole lot of life. He became such a big part of the heart of Salty Dagger, and now he’s off chasing some of his own dreams.

We’re so stoked to share this beautiful, fun, playful and earnest dream of his with this Aloe craft. His dreams tested us a little, and it took us two years to bring this one to life, but somehow that feels fitting. This craft is this playful human all wrapped up into a little, take-it-as-it-comes kind of energy.

Sometimes you just need a little Aloe, hey? x

I kept the peace for so long that I forgot what it feels like to choose myself.
Walking away isn’t just a decision, it is a shedding of an identity.
Letting go of who I thought I had to be… and facing who I actually am. 🌸
I’m learning that I am enough, and that I deserve more than what I was willing to put up with.
It wasn’t easy to see it on my own.
It took people who love me and were not afraid to speak the truth, even when it was hard to hear.
I am learning that sometimes I have to borrow their perspective, to learn to see things from different angles.
Trusting in the Universe. ✨
I was finally able to tell the old me ‘It’s safe to let go now.’

I cried because I didn’t think this kind of love was real. 🫶Growing up, life was about survival. I was raised in Java with my three brothers and learnt pretty quickly how to fend for myself.

My parents divorced. My dad was rarely around. He was in the drug world. Same with my mother. At one point they all ended up in prison. Since then, my father has passed, and I haven’t spoken with my mother in 5 years. There were a lot of moments where I felt like I was navigating life alone, and I carried that weight with me for a long time...

Until I became a father.

When my daughter was born, something changed. Looking at her, I felt a kind of love I had never experienced before. It made me realise how much I had been searching for it without even knowing.

Now, every decision I make is with my family in mind. Being a father has taught me love, but my partner taught me responsibility, patience, empathy, and what it means to truly show up for someone. I couldn’t have done it without her, and I’m still learning everyday.

Whether it’s with my daughter, my wife, or the young people I work with through surfing, I try to share what I’ve learned along the way.

My daughter gave me another chance to see life differently, and for that, I’ll always be grateful. 🙏
