POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Deeply excited to finally announce, that I am adapting Joanne Greenberg’s seminal novel, I NEVER PROMISED YOU A ROSE GARDEN into a feature film.

Over a decade ago, I read and was immediately arrested by this semi-biographical account of Joanne’s life, which courageously explores the depths of schizophrenia and mental health, and a young woman’s struggle to find her way between two words… a kingdom she has created within her own mind, and a reality with all its shades, from trauma to loss, joy to hope.

I am very honored to help tell this story, producing alongside my husband and partner in all things, @emwin3

Thank you, @mmgrobar for breaking this story and to my amazing agent @hannahdkatirai at @creativeartistsagency for being such a champion. A few snippets of the article below, which you can read more of on @deadline

. . .

EXCLUSIVE: After a decade-long effort to secure the film rights to I Never Promised You a Rose Garden —Joanne Greenberg’s classic 1964 novel, which she calls “one of the most arresting and authentic explorations of mental illness ever written” — Ashley Avis has done it.
The rising filmmaker, whose credits include Disney+’s Black Beauty, will direct from her own script and produce alongside Edward Winters through her Winterstone Pictures banner.

As Deborah loses her grip on reality, she’s admitted to Chestnut Lodge, where she forms an unlikely bond with renowned German psychiatrist Dr. Clara Fried, whose own past remains shrouded in unresolved trauma and mystery. In the years following World War II, these two women must navigate the fragile boundary between reality and fantasy, forging a unique relationship that challenges the fabric of mental health as we know it.

Avis told us of the novel, “Joanne Greenberg crafted a story that is at once deeply intimate and breathtakingly imaginative, because it is courageously personal. She invites us into the Kingdom of Yr, into all of its seduction, and beauty along with its violence – and we will question, along with Deborah, whether it is possible to give it up.”

In conversation about wild horses with Diane Lane.

As national attention swells for the plight of America’s equines, I wanted to return to this fantastic Q&A with the endlessly elegant Diane during a screening of WILD BEAUTY: MUSTANG SPIRIT OF THE WEST.

This was a few weeks before Diane came with us to Congress, and we walked the halls together, lobbying our lawmakers for better protections, and adding numerous co-sponsors to both the Wild Horse and Burro Protection Act, and the SAFE Act.

As we explore through our five-year documentary journey in WILD BEAUTY, and this powerful discussion, the fight to save our wild horses is intrinsically tied to our domestic horses, given that no equine in the United States is beyond the reach of the slaughter pipeline.

The pipeline does not discriminate by breed, against wildness or pedigree, and to be clear: it persists due to a desire for horse meat to be consumed overseas.

Not because of a wild horse problem, not because of an overpopulation problem, not because of an “unwanted horse crisis” - it’s important to distinguish these are red herrings created by the well-funded opposition.

It is our duty to our equines - both wild and domestic, to pass legislation and ensure they do not get thrown away into the dark, and shipped across our borders to meet an unimaginable end they don’t deserve.

Listen to this conversation, and if you’re moved, please take action.

The Wild Beauty Foundation is leading a national campaign to pass the SAFE Act, and you can find a myriad of resources and ways to help horses in moments at www.losthorses.org

Thank you for being part of this journey, and for standing with the Lost Horses.

90 DAYS. On November 1st, the aerial culling of brumbies is scheduled to resume in Kosciuszko National Park.

We have chosen to release the following footage, which we spent several weeks documenting in Australia.

CONTENT WARNING: The following video contains graphic and deeply distressing images of dead and injured horses.

What you are about to see, if you choose to watch, is beyond comprehension. But if we learned anything during our time there, transparency is crucial.

The NSW Government and NPWS have not shown the public this haunting reality. The Invasive Species Council continues to defend aerial shooting as necessary, “humane” management.

There is nothing humane about this.

When wild herds and their bloodlines are systematically erased, they are gone. Watch this if you can, share, and please raise your voice while there is still time for those who remain.

We will continue adding information, evidence, and ways to help at: www.wildbeautyfoundation.org/brumbystrong

An enormous thank you to photographer Kiki Sjoberg for your courage, your friendship, and for helping us hike hours into the forest with our crew to obtain this crucial footage. @brumby_strong

Thank you to everyone for standing with us through this difficult journey, and for being #BrumbyStrong.

In honor of the life and legacy of Monty Roberts, let us all do something today to stand with wild horses.

Whether it’s a post, a share, a call to your Members of Congress, let’s raise much needed awareness for our wild ones - from the mustangs here at home, and those who need help in different countries, such as the brumbies in Australia. Do a little something today, for him.

Thank you for all you did Monty. For every horse and every person you inspired or healed. You will be missed, and I’m so grateful I got to know you, Shy Boy, and your extraordinary family.

What a special morning with @angustaylormp discussing importance of preserving wild places as well as iconic species such as the brumby. We are all part of an extraordinary tapestry we must work together to protect.

#brumbystrong

. . .

From Angus Taylor:

I spent the morning with acclaimed filmmaker Ashley Avis, who is visiting Australia from the United States to learn about our brumbies and the people who have cared for them for generations.

Across the world, we’re seeing governments overreach, pushing aside local knowledge in favour of decisions made by bureaucracies.

Too much power has been handed to unelected officials who don’t understand the communities affected by their decisions.

The people who live, work and care for these places deserve to be heard. A government I lead will preserve our heritage and protect our way of life.

Very proud of this Lost Horses spot, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the country. It’s a bit surreal to release it from around the world here in Australia on the 4th of July (technically the 5th our time) as we fight for horses in the United States while unexpectedly jumping in to help the brumbies.

Compassion knows no borders.

. . .

America’s story was written alongside the horse. The next chapter is ours to write.

Their history is as iconic as ours, as they’ve carried us across new frontiers, helped our communities, and continue to enrich our lives today as companions and partners in sport, healing, work, and service.

Despite 83% of Americans opposing horse slaughter, 25,000 American horses are transported across our borders to be slaughtered for human consumption each year. As we celebrate our nation’s legacy, we must ensure we honor the horses who supported us.

The Wild Beauty Foundation is proud to partner with the ASPCA in the fight to permanently end the slaughter of American Horses. @wildbeautyspirit @aspca

Join us and take action TODAY by telling your Congress members to pass the SAFE Act NOW:  www.losthorses.org & www.aspca.org/SAFEAct

A special thank you to musician Dewey Bunnell of America for lending his voice to this tribute. Their iconic song, “A Horse with No Name,” has been part of the American soundtrack for generations.

There are no words, for this. On the ground in Kocizosko National Park, Australia.

“Shameful.”

There are many words that come to mind when trying to comprehend the violence currently befalling the wild horses of Kosciuszko National Park.

Shameful is the word I reserve for those who have authorized, defended, condoned, mocked, and perpetuated misinformation surrounding the deaths of Australia’s iconic brumbies; shot from helicopters inside a beloved national park closed to the public.

There is nothing “humane” about this.

The lack of transparency, the dismissal of public concern, and the continued belittling of those who dare question this operation are not indicative of principled leadership.

Anyone with a shred of compassion cannot watch these horses fleeing in terror and conclude that what is happening is right, fair, or humane.
