“I’ve been called many things since beginning my career in PR. Funny. Smart. Creative. Innovative. Tough. Relentless. Impolite. Even “crazy” - gotta love that one. And you know what? At times they’ve all been true. It’s a fortunate thing to be in an industry that allows you to be all of those things and more - and celebrates you (like today) and forgives you when you fall short...” A snippet of my #prwhalloffemme induction speech. Sincere thanks for all the well wishes & support - it’s like a battery pack and I will continue to be that #elephantintheroom #wcw #thepresentisfemale #beflawsome #watchmewerk #workwithpurpose #agencylife #leadersgonnalead #juneowesmenothing #mycuprunnethover #xoq #anditwasallyellow

After leaving her overseas insurance underwriting job in 2007, Ashley Hunter decided to return to the U.S. and hang her own shingle. Only problem: she wasn't getting the same success in the U.S. as she was overseas. With encouragement from her former boss, Hunter decided to return to the Middle East. In 2014, her five-person company, HM Risk Group, wrote several million dollars in annual insurance premiums for startups, as well as Fortune 500s and other large companies, in the Middle East, U.S., U.K. and Australia.
That’s not to say that launching a company abroad was easy. “I firmly believe it takes twice as long to grow a business abroad,” Hunter says. Despite her familiarity with the local business landscape, there were international laws and tax regulations to decipher, corporate customs to adopt and countless hours of travel between Bahrain and her satellite stateside office in Texas. “Just because you understand the business in the U.S. doesn’t mean it’s going to translate dollar for dollar someplace else,” Hunter says.
