Contemporary art collector @bernardlumpkin sits down with Justsmile for Issue 7 to discuss his philosophies of collecting. Amid his nationally touring ‘Young, Gifted and Black’ exhibition, which pulls from the Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection, the advocate, patron, and educator gives us a look into his art-filled Tribeca home and speaks about the living room as classroom and the importance of championing Black art in a time of creative censorship.

Ryan Frigillana: “Manong” | Ashley McLean: “Seeking you in other bodies...”

In-Person Artist Talk with Ashely McLean: Sat, Oct 5, 2 PM

Ryan Frigillana contemplates the legacy of Filipinx migration to the United States in his ongoing project “Manong”. Frigillana explores overarching themes of the diaspora — family, labor, faith, and mortality—centered on the life and experiences of his ailing mother. These pictures form a macrocosmic meditation on diasporic grief and resilience, honoring his mother’s story within a broader spectrum of sociopolitical history.

Ashley McLean’s exhibition “Seeking you in other bodies...” renders her subjects through photography with a deep sense of tenderness and sensitivity, highlighting their connection to the natural world. Her work explores themes of masculinity, Black identity, and subjectivity, considering the reclamation of the Black male persona and what visual capacity they represent. There is an accentuation of the body (while working with the formality of portraiture), a haptic representation of fatherhood, and engagement with nature that settles in the middle of the sublime and realism, with an aim to hold a moment in time that is both tender and mundane.

En Foco, Inc. is a non-profit that supports U.S. based photographers of African, Asian, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islander heritage. Founded in 1974, En Foco makes their work visible to the art world, yet remains accessible to under-served communities. Through exhibitions, workshops, events, and publications, it provides professional recognition, honoraria, and assistance to photographers as they grow into different stages of their careers.

Deadline Extended! ⚡There’s still time to enter the 2024 Creator Labs Photo Fund for the chance to receive a $6,000 award to sustain your artistic work and practice.

Started in 2021 between Google’s Creator Labs and Aperture, this call-for-entry initiative provides financial support to encourage artists at formative moments in their careers.

Submissions to the Creator Labs Photo Fund are free and open to any photographers living in the US, and each of the 30 selected artists will be awarded a prize of $6,000 and a Pixel 8a device.

Extended Deadline July 16. Submit now through our link in bio or at www.photo.fund

Entrants will need to submit 8 to 10 images from a completed or ongoing body of work made in the last three years, showing a commitment to making a cohesive and compelling series or project.
