Meet Joseph Jeffers, the ASKI community and his project Echoes of Resistance, presented at our Future Bodies - the dance that persists Symposium.

Joseph is a dance artist and the founder of ASKI – Advice, Support, Knowledge and Information – a leading charity based in Croydon, England, which aims to support and signpost individuals who face barriers to inclusion.

Joseph was part of the first cohort of the MA Dance: PCA programme, completing his master’s degree with his project ‘Echoes of Resistance’, a beautiful dance facilitation and film which empowers people from the Windrush generation in the UK, shaping an understanding of resistance and seeking justice and equality for this group of elderly Black people living in London.

May your work continue to resonate, Joseph!

This week the team at Sharp Raiser supported the book launch of Sharp Raiser’s Director with community groups from Southwark Pensioners Centre, ASKI and Place at my Table, at Brixton Village Market.
It was a wonderful summer afternoon and evening about creating spaces for dialogue, connection and collective reflection.
Stories help us make sense of our lives, our communities and the forces that shape them.
They give voice to experiences that can too often go unheard.

We’re looking forward to bringing Sky City into conversation with more community groups.

Still reflecting on a wonderful summer afternoon at the British Library’s Summer Scholars programme, where I shared research from my new book project, Forefathers: Four Jamaican Father Figures, alongside Samuel Joe-Guan Niu’s talk. It was standing room only.
Huge thanks to the Eccles Institute Writer’s Award and the Hay Festival Global Writers Award for supporting this work, and to the Caribbean elders from Place at My Table and ASKI, alongside the other women and friends who came along and engaged in the conversations. So many women came to me afterwards asking how they could research and write something similar. Watch this space.
For many, the day became more than a talk. It was an opportunity to discover how the British Library can help us explore our own family histories, communities and untold stories.
