Today is the final day of our group exhibition Þverskurður / Cross Section at Þula, and we’re closing it out by highlighting two artists whose practices span generations and approaches: Davíð Örn Halldórsson and Tolli Morthens.

Davíð Örn Halldórsson (b. 1976)
Davíð Örn pushes the language of painting into unpredictable terrain, working with found materials, layered media, and a playful yet pointed visual vocabulary. His works often emerge from moments in daily life, filtered through personal mythologies, absurdist humor, and art historical references. Whether sprayed, painted, or collaged, each piece seems to carry its own internal logic and irreverent wit. Based in Stuttgart, Davíð has exhibited widely across Iceland and Europe, and his work is held in several public collections, including the Reykjavík Art Museum and the National Gallery of Iceland.

Tolli Morthens (b. 1953)
Tolli’s expressive brushwork and vibrant palette have become synonymous with a deeply felt connection to Icelandic nature. Since the 1980s, his work has traced the contours of landscapes, memory, and the passage of time, capturing both the drama and stillness of rural Iceland. Tolli emerged from the Berlin art scene in the mid-80s and brought that neo-expressionist energy into dialogue with Icelandic themes. His paintings have been exhibited extensively in Iceland and abroad, and they’re housed in numerous public and private collections. Tolli lives and works in Reykjavík.

We encourage you to visit today and see their works in person - Þverskurður / Cross Section closes at the end of the day.

Today, we’re highlighting two artists featured in our group exhibition Þverskurður / Cross Section, on view at Þula until April 5th.

Guðmundur Thoroddsen (b. 1980)
Known for his layered compositions and organic forms, Guðmundur Thoroddsen’s work balances structure and spontaneity, often incorporating figurative gestures within abstraction. Using oil and oil sticks, he plays with transformation and materiality, inviting open-ended interpretations. His practice is deeply influenced by the Icelandic landscape, translating its raw textures into dynamic visual language. Thoroddsen holds an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York and has exhibited widely in Iceland and abroad, including recent solo exhibitions at Asya Geisberg Gallery (USA) and Þula (IS).

Áslaug Íris Katrín Friðjónsdóttir (b. 1981)
Material and texture take center stage in Áslaug Íris Katrín Friðjónsdóttir’s distinctive sculptural paintings. Through an experimental approach, she draws on petrified surfaces and integrates stone with other elements, creating abstract imagery that feels both grounded and ethereal. With an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Áslaug has exhibited internationally, including at Berg Contemporary, the National Gallery of Iceland, and Gerðarsafn. She has also participated in CHART and Market art fairs and held solo exhibitions at Þula and Listval.

📍 Visit us at Þula before April 5th to experience their works in person!
