Our next monthly photography meetup is happening Saturday, September 26 at Grumpy Bean. We want to keep building this community and make this one even bigger than the last.

Last month was great because so many people brought out physical prints and zines. Seeing what everyone shot over the last 30 days was the best part, so we really want to keep that going. Bring a stack of your recent prints or a zine to pass around, swap, and share.

All photographers are welcome here. It doesn't matter if your focus is street, landscape, fashion, editorial, or documentary. Digital, film, an old rangefinder, instant, or just a cell phone. It all works.

Come hang out, talk shop, and meet other locals. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and Grumpy Bean is donating proceeds from our featured special, the pistachio salted caramel latte, directly to Seattle Children's Research Institute right here in the building we're part of. Grab one to support the cause while you look through prints. See you on the 26th!

A Summer Temptation
Carmel is my precious village. And for nearly 70 years, Monterey Car Week has brought an extraordinary spectacle to Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Pebble Beach.
For one unforgettable week, the world’s most magnificent new and antique cars take over our streets. Their roaring engines, ingenious designs, alluring colors, and irresistible curves tempt every one of our senses.
Like midnight lovers crawling through back-room windows, they quietly, or not so quietly, intrude into our little village.
And forgive me, but nobody here really minds. Like desperate sinners waiting for their pleasure, we have been waiting a full calendar year.
These stunning machines parade through our streets and highways like snooty high-fashion models on a catwalk, proudly displaying their pedigrees and the wealth required to sit behind those wheels.
Cars arrive from every corner of the world, many destined for auctions throughout the week. For those who worship the automobile, Carmel becomes a paradise of temptation and pleasure.
I remember a Fiat 600 that was auctioned for a price at which someone could buy a home today. One of my uncles owned one when I was a kid. It was so tiny that I thought it was an adult toy made for children to drive.
In 2014 alone, Monterey Car Week auction sales approached $500 million, with a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta selling for nearly $40 million. That was more than 20 years ago. 🙈
On the final Sunday, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance brings Car Week to its grand finale, with proceeds supporting charitable causes.
A Summer Temptation was photographed in 2005 in Los Angeles, California.
For art collectors, signed copies of this photograph and my other work are available at the iconic Weston Gallery in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and through the link in my bio.

I’ve always wanted to do a photo documentary project in India, and during my very first trip there in 2023. On my second week of my two months journey I was staying at this small village. The 2nd day there I became seriously ill. In the middle of the night, around 2 a.m., they brought a man which they hope could help me.
The only one that could speak English were the owner of the place were I stayed at and an Indian assistant I was traveling with.
It turns out that the man they brought to help was not a medical doctor. He was only trained in basic veterinarian work with farm animals.
Finding anyone with any form of transportation was another ordeal, and someone went around, waking up town folks until one with a car was found.

So at 3 am I had to be rushed to a hospital in New Delhi, where I spent several days recovering. I honestly can’t remember much of what happened to me except for the face and eyes of an Angel 😇

I was so weak that I could barely speak. But every morning, I would wake up and notice the same person had been in my room through the night, sometimes sitting quietly, sometimes asleep in a chair beside my bed.

As I slowly regained my strength, I asked my doctor, “Who was the person who stayed with me every night?”

He smiled and explained that in India, when someone is hospitalized, a family member often stays with them. It’s rooted in the belief that no one should have to face their weakest moments alone.

The woman who stayed with me wasn’t family. She was a stranger. I never learned her name. We never had a conversation. Yet, every night, from darkness until dawn, she was there, keeping watch over someone she had never met, making sure I wasn’t alone.

On the morning I was discharged, I asked where I could pay my hospital bill.

I The doctor looked at me and said, “You are a guest in India. There is no charge.”

I arrived in India hoping to document its people. Instead, in one of the most vulnerable moments of my life, they showed me something far more powerful than any photograph could ever capture. This was humanity at its best. #leicam6 #manuellopaganelli

Football may be the only sport on Earth that can truly unite people across cultures. It is played in the world’s grand stadiums, but its true home has always been in the streets, dusty fields, empty lots, village squares, backyards, and crowded neighborhoods where children create goals from stones, sandals, or backpacks. For millions, the game begins with bare feet and endless imagination.
For ninety minutes, or even for a few fleeting minutes on any street, everyone speaks the same language and unlike many sports that require expensive equipment or training facilities inside gated country clubs, with a high membership fee, football has always belonged to ordinary people.
It belongs to the barrios where children invent stadiums from empty lots or where two stones, old sandals, or discarded backpacks become goalposts. I took this photograph during a high school band rehearsal while I was working as a staff photographer for the Chattanooga Times from 1982-84. Those years became the foundation of my life as a documentary photographer, the years when I learned not only how to see, but how to feel through a camera. Looking back now, I realize those days in Chattanooga shaped everything that came after them. They taught me patience, humility, endurance, and above all, the importance of paying attention to ordinary human encounters before they went away.
At the time, I was young, hungry, and still searching for my own voice and what life had planned for me. Most of days at the paper were spent driving through Chattanooga and its surrounding areas with my cameras in the passenger seat and my camera bag full of black and white film rolls. My photo director would send me out chasing assignments that many people might have considered small or routine. Even when I was sent to any specific assignmentgs to a football games under Friday night lights, church gatherings, family BBQs, factory workers coming off shifts, families standing on porches under the cool shade of the portico, children running barefoot through sprinklers, or school musical band rehearsals like this one.
Observing humanity and documenting the lives of strangers through a viewfinder, taught me something powerful very early: there are no small moments. Every moment contains its unique world if you slow down enough to truly see it.
This image was made on one of those heavy humid Tennessee days when the heat wrapped around my body like a wet burning cloth. The air itself felt exhausted. Even now, decades later, I can still remember the smell of cut grass baking under the sun, the sound of distant cicadas buzzing in the trees, and the thick humidity rising from the pavement and me pouring cold glasses of water over my head… story continues on my Substack. #leicacamerausa #manuellopaganelli

DEBUTANTE LILIAN DAVENPORT STILL MISSING! “Just walk in,” he said in a friendly tone. “He’s been waiting for you.”
River stepped inside.
There he was, 52 years old lieutenant sergeant Officer Rusty Martinez, leaning back in his chair like he was in his living room, and he owned everything it came with. Sleeves rolled, tie loosened, toothpick dancing in the corner of his mouth. His shoes were tipped forward, chair balanced on two legs in a way that would’ve gotten anyone else chewed out and a week of desk duty.
“Well, I’ll be damned Tennessee River,” Rusty smirked and looked up. The chair dropped, flat onto all fours, with a dull thud sound. He looked up as Tennessee came in, with a tired expression spreading across his eyes. Hell of a trip, huh? You look like hell.” He gestured loosely. “Sorry to drag you here and yank you out of paradise. I know how much you love hiding out up north, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur… fishing, hunting, pretending the world doesn’t stink.”
River dropped into the chair across from him, carefully setting the folded telegraph on the desk like it might go off. “Drove straight through.” He set his hat on the desk.” A long drive. Long enough to know I don’t like the sound of this already.” He rubbed his chin. “Like I told you over the phone, my car gave out in Santa Barbara. You can pick up the tab. And the train fare too.”
Rusty didn’t hesitate. “Done. I owe you more than that.”
“You usually do.” He continued, “Start talking.” Tennessee didn’t smile. “Give it to me straight, skip all the nonsense. I am all ears. Rusty.”
Rusty’s grin flickered, then faded. “Yeah. This one’s different, Tennie.” He leaned forward, elbows on the desk. “This ain’t just a mess. It’s a full-blown disaster. Mayor’s breathing down our necks. friend’s of the family. The press is circling like vultures, in front of the department. Even camping outside the Davenport’s Bel Air state. Every hour we don’t have answers, somebody else wants a head on a platter.”

Happy Friday!! Chilling Out at home with Chris Isaak

I have worked on countless photo productions where everything felt enormous , five assistants setting up my cameras, moving lights across the floor, make-up artists hovering between frames, racks of wardrobe, producers, publicists, caterers, and a long parade of collaborators all orbiting around the image before it even existed. The level of pressure in those moments is huge, almost physical, as if it has chosen to hold its breath until the first shutter click happens.
Those gigs can be exciting in their own way, like building a small city, with its people from a single photograph. Similar to how a fiction writer creates new worlds.
But over the years, I’ve realized that my favorite images rarely come from all that rush
The photographs that stay with me, the ones that still feel alive years later, almost always come from the isolated moments when having a small setup with only two or three people in that space where nothing else stands between the camera and whatever I am trying to create. I want it to naturally reveal on its own.
This photograph is one of those moments.
Years ago, a magazine called and asked me to photograph Chris Isaak. They said they wanted the pictures to feel old-timey somehow, less Hollywood, less glamorous, less manufactured. They wanted something that felt worn in, human, maybe even a little tone down and soulful. They wanted an image that felt as though it had already lived a life before anyone looked at it.
