History They Didn’t Play on the Radio

Kassia (c. 805 – c. 865) ✨
Born around 805 in Constantinople to a wealthy family, Kassia was known for her beauty, brilliance, and bold spirit. Legend says she took part in the imperial “bride show” where Prince Theophilos was choosing a wife.
When he told her, “Through a woman come forth the baser things,” referring to Eve, Kassia fearlessly replied, “And through a woman come forth the better things,” pointing to the Virgin Mary and the hope of salvation. His pride was wounded and though he was said to love her, he chose someone else.
Instead of becoming an empress, Kassia chose a different path. Around 843, she founded a convent near Constantinople and became its first abbess. She lived during a time of persecution under Emperor Theophilos, who opposed the veneration of holy icons. Kassia and her convent suffered greatly she was even reportedly whipped yet she never wavered in her faith.
She is remembered for saying:
“I hate silence, when it is time to speak.”
After Theophilos’ death, peace was restored. Kassia later traveled to Italy and the island of Kasos, where she died sometime between 867 and 890.
But her legacy didn’t end there. Kassia was a gifted hymnographer and composer. Many of her hymns are still sung in the Byzantine liturgy today. Her most famous work, the Hymn of Kassiani, is sung every Holy Wednesday a haunting, deeply moving chant that remains one of the most powerful pieces of Byzantine sacred music.
A woman of courage, conviction, and creativity Kassia’s voice still echoes more than a thousand years later.

If you enjoyed this little deep dive into music history, hit that ❤️ and give us a follow.
We’ve got plenty more stories buried in the grooves the kind they didn’t teach you in school and didn’t play on the radio.
Stay tuned, keep your needle ready, and watch for what we drop next. 🎶🔥
