Happy National Poetry Day! 💐

For me poetry is about finding wonder in the everyday.

This year has been jam-packed with poetry projects which have brought so much wonder and joy.

From taking part in the Emerging Poets Spring Residency at Cyprus Well @causleytrust at the beginning of the year, having a poem published in Cornish literary and arts magazine @aspier_mag, working with @southbankcentre on A Poet In Every Port, performing at Kernewek Live!, Rent-a-poet live on BBC Radio, to tomorrow’s performance at Falmouth Art Gallery with @smallactsliveart as part of 7 Small Acts, exploring the alchemy of granite. 🪨✨

Feeling very grateful for all the joy and wonder that poetry has brought into the year. 💛

Now that the 2026 Penzance LitFest is over, the team are taking some well-earned holidays. What are they doing on holiday? Reading of course! Here’s a peek:
Rachel has 3 books on the go!
Careless People by Sarah Wynn-Williams,
The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz
and a re-reading of Cassandra Darke by Posy Simmonds

Linda has just finished Patrick O’Brian’s The Post Captain (is attempting to read the whole series!)
and is re-reading Peter Ackroyd’s Great Fire of London.
On her TBR pile is A N Wilson’s The Victorians, Andrew O’Hagan’s Be Near Me and Sarah Perry’s Melmoth

Lin is enjoying listening to the first Simon Mason DI Wilkins book – A Killing in November - after Simon’s appearance at the Litfest! Uses XigXag to enjoy audiobooks while cooking..

Spencer’s current read is Against The Tide by G.D. Wright with
A Sociopath’s Guide To A Successful Marriage by M.K. Oliver and The Murder At World’s End by Ross Montgomery next.

Helen is enjoying the 2nd issue of the Cornish Literary and Arts magazine - Aspier Magazine, in which she has a short story published, titled ‘Three’.

Jil has just finished Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy (highly recommended!) and is now reading The Most by Jessica Anthony (short, perfectly pitched, with echoes of Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller)

Graham is reading Samarkand by Amin Maalouf - a Lebanese writer - a piece of time hopping historical fiction published in 1992 set mostly in Iran in both the 12th and the 20th centuries.

My short story ‘Three’ is about a man meeting a boy with a broken wing, on a cliff edge … or is it? Now it’s published in @aspier_mag, alongside my drawn-with-a-feather illustrations, you can read it then tell me what you think. And enjoy work by @clarehowdle @eathornepoet @clareowenwriter @elizabeth.loveday.art among so many talented others.

I was very excited to receive a copy of @aspier_mag in the post recently!

My client @kleiner_shames and I can be found in conversation discussing his practice, inspirations and next steps. This interview is an exploration of Kleiner Shames’ practice from the earliest days to future dreams. It was a joy to chat with Kleiner and learn even more about how his creative journey has unfolded.

The magazine has been incredibly thoughtfully curated and produced, it’s such an exciting representation of Cornwall’s creative sector straight from the artists, writers and creatives that make it so dynamic.

Head to @aspier_mag page to purchase your copy.

What a treat to be handed this by my postie this morning. Huge congratulations to @aspier_mag on another beautiful issue. And seeing April June January on the printed page (and its characters on the cover - beautiful artwork by @elizabeth.loveday.art ) swelled my heart. Thank you. Leafing through the contents it looks like a stellar issue with no much to dive into. Make sure you pick up a copy before they sell out!

Eight years ago, at a writing workshop on the edge of Bodmin Moor, I started work on a short story about a young woman who’d recently moved to London and, in an attempt to ground herself with something familiar, goes in search of a painting - a print of which hung on the wall of her childhood home.

The workshop was run by the wonderful Jenny Alexander and was part of a series called ‘Writing the Family.’ I was so inspired by Jenny’s quiet wisdom, generosity, playfulness (I’ve collaged ever since!), the conversation and the rich, reflective silences she cultivated round her kitchen table, that I ended up with nine interlinked short stories. Three were published by Litro, Fairlight and Storgy soon afterwards, and I’ve been tinkering with the rest ever since. Last summer, after a visit to London myself, I took another look at 'Beata Beatrix' and I’m thrilled that it’s been selected for the second edition of Aspier – a magazine that celebrates Cornwall’s writers, artists and thinkers, and - as you can see from Elizabeth Loveday's stunning cover design - is itself a thing of beauty.

Jenny recently moved to Beckenham but still runs workshops face-to-face (sometimes in Cornwall 🤗) and on Zoom. Do seek her out @jenalexanderbooks and on Substack: @jennyalexander1

Oh, how we love the printed word. So it’s a joy to see Cornish literary and arts magazine @aspier_mag release a second issue, featuring writing from and interviews with contemporary Cornish voices.

With themes including motherhood, ecological anxiety, and what it means to be an artist, the spring / summer issue promises provocative and thoughtful ideas. We’re especially excited as our very own clarehowdle’s short story happens to be a cover story, featured alongside brilliant poetry, memoir and fiction by other Stranger friends, such as @cathygalvinwords, @luke.a.thompson and @thewildflowerhour.

Available to pre-order now via link in our bio. 📖

Gorgeous cover artwork by @elizabeth.loveday.art 🎨 The yellow used is a call back to Clare’s story; spring, a beach, a yellow dress.
