Saul Williams’ 3rd LP was my entry into his catalogue. I started with ‘The Inevitable Rise & Liberation of NiggyTardust!’ because it was completely produced by Trent Reznor.

In terms of composition this record continues the sound shift of Reznor that started in 2005 when ‘With Teeth’ was released.

This record even has tracks that feel like precursors to the soundscapes on ‘Ghosts I-IV’ (songs like “No One Ever Does,” & “Banged & Blown Through” come to mind).

Industrial/Hip-Hop? NIN with a different vocalist?

Go stream it & get back to me!

If there ever was a band that perfectly fit the definition of underrated, Nothingface would be it. The band released their third album titled ‘Violence’ in the year 2000 following the moody and melancholic ‘An Audio Guide to Everyday Atrocity’ in 98’. This would be their first major label record and probably the peak of the band’s career according to a lot of their fans.

The album lives up to its title in the sense that it is 48 minutes of pure and uncontrolled aggression. Each track has something different to offer which makes you hit the replay button again and again. While the majority of the record has hard hitting tracks like “Blue Skin” and the pseudo-title track “Can’t Wait for Violence,” there are also moments where the band slows things down and mixes things up like in the songs “For All the Sin” and “Filthy”which are a little more on the moodier side of the spectrum. These tracks still have an underlying heaviness which does not hamper the momentum of the record.

Everyone involved in this record delivers on all fronts whether it was the insane Rhythm section of Bill Gaal and Chris Houck, the creative riffs of Tom Maxwell or the melodic yet at the same time visceral vocals of Matt Holt (R.I.P).

In a year where albums like White Pony and Hybrid Theory were making waves across the world, Violence was a record that unfortunately got swept under the rug. However, I feel that It is an undeniable classic in the Nu Metal genre.

Released 23 years ago this week was the Nine Inch Nails record that gets snubbed by most. I am of course talking about 1999’s ‘The Fragile.’

Is it overlooked because it was a double album? Or is it because a majority of the album is instrumental?

Personally it is my all time favorite release by NIN.

Trent Reznor had been very busy since 1994’s ‘The Downward Spiral.’ Drugs & alcohol had almost ruined his life. Nine Inch Nails stole the show at Woodstock ‘94 (which he said paid for the debt incurred recording ‘The Downward Spiral’). Produced (in a very unorthodox way) Marilyn Manson’s 1996 breakthrough ‘Antichrist Superstar’, then had a bitter falling out with Manson.

I appreciate the long gaps between Nine Inch Nail’s records. The traditional two year album cycle most follow never sat right with me. Where TDS was harsh, dark, & heavy, ‘The Fragile’ is the polar opposite. It is atmospheric, dreamlike even. There is a bit of dare I say hope(?) on the record.

Both discs clock in at a combined run time of 103 minutes. Each track flows seamlessly into the next. The album like mentioned above is a double album, Disc 1 & 2 are known as ‘Left’ & ‘Right.’

‘Left’ is the superior disc for me.

2000 saw the release of the remix companion ‘Things Falling Apart’ another f*uckin’ gem.

In 2016 Nine Inch Nails released ‘The Fragile: Deviations 1’ (solely on vinyl) in which one finds instrumentals, & alternate versions of songs from both discs.

Wishing 30 well as I boldly leave her behind to become a thirtysomething. 👋 🎂

Thank you to everyone who made this year a (literal, lifelong) dream come true (if anyone wants to read my 6th grade feature screenplay about my P.E. class hmu). To all who played a part, big or small, in bringing @throuplethemovie to production - I have so much gratitude pulsing through my veins, it’s honestly weird. 😭

Onward we go to 31 - with all of you. I would obviously have it no other way. 🎉
