Küme Mongen is a documentary exploring Mapuche perspectives on what it means to live well, our relationship with the land, community, and all living things.

What started as an idea to reconnect with my roots became turned into an exciting documentary I’m excited to finally share with my community at ASU.

This was all made possible by the support from @asucollegeofglobalfutures @asusilc @barretthonors

From September 15 to October 15, we recognize the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States. While Brazil is not a Hispanic country, as a Portuguese-speaking Latin American nation, it is an important part of the broader Latin American community and its cultural diversity.

This month, we’re proud to highlight the Brazilian community and its unique contributions through music, traditions, food, language, and stories that enrich our shared cultural experience. 💚💛💙

Let’s celebrate our differences, embrace our connections, and make space for every voice!

What happens when the rhythms of Northeast Brazil meet rock, hip-hop, and a powerful call for social change?

Born in Recife, Pernambuco, in the early 1990s, Manguebeat emerged as a cultural movement that connected the city's rich musical traditions, including maracatu and coco, with contemporary global sounds.

Inspired by Recife's mangrove ecosystems, the movement used the image of the mangrove as a symbol of cultural diversity, creativity, and resistance to social inequality.

What did you think of this cultural tip? Let us know in the comments, and tell us what you'd like to discover next about Brazil! 🇧🇷

Two rivers (the Rhine and the Danube), many countries, and so many good stories... This spring I'm teaching Waterways, a deep cultural and environmental dive into the Rhine and Danube through myth, literature, current news, filma, and history. From sirens on the rocks to castles, wars, environmental disasters, leisure travel, and the rivers that quietly shaped modern Central Europe. Taught in English, no textbook needed, and it fulfills your GOLD Global Communities, Societies and Individuals requirement. Come find me in SLC/ROM 394! Prof. Meiroșu. The Danube at the Iron Gates, between Serbia and Romania. The poster advertises for ROM/SLC 394 for Spring 2027, a course that has a GOLD GCSI designation

Learning a language should feel like more than memorizing verb tables. In ROM 102, you'll build real Romanian while getting a feel for the culture behind it It's a Gold HUAD course, hybrid format, on campus twice a week (Tu-Th from 10.30). If you took Romanian 101 or you have some Romanian knowledge, you can dive right in.

Grew up hearing Romanian at home? This class might be a perfect fit; reach out first so we can talk placement. Spring 2027, come find me! (mmeirosi@asu.edu)

It was a busy week of research, networking, and representing ASU out there for our Portuguese faculty:
1. Professor Glen Goodman attended the largest meeting in higher education in Latin America, which took place in São Paulo, Brazil. He and Julia Rosen, Vice President of Global Academic Initiatives at ASU (who is fluent in Spanish and Portuguese!) represented ASU, sharing good practices on distance learning. They appear here with Ricardo Muccilo, president of CESUCA in Brazil.
2. Professor Ligia Bezerra gave invited lectures about her current research on Latin American popular music at the University of Georgia and at Spelman College.
