an attempt at sincerity:

it is hard for me to post my songs amidst the chaos of the political sphere we are living in today. i like to write about my fanciful every day life. my everyday joys and heartbreaks. small things. the ripples in a pond. the bite of an orange. the graceful crest of a reddish egret's wings.

so songwriting is a bit of an escape. i'm too aware of the privilege i'm granted to even be able to escape the daily horrors of the news cycle. i let my disillusionment numb me into inaction. is there a point of asking for attention for my humble little songs? no, seriously, what is the point? am i not older, withered, genderfucked, "annoyingly covid cautious", doomed to be shunted off to the sidelines, hiding so small in the corner you could blink and you'd miss me?

i used to think yes. but now that i have friends who really love me, i'm starting to think: fuck no!!!

i guess this year has filled me with so much gratitude that it spilled over in the form of a song. the music video for nyc mini was filmed during a sunny weeklong trip to nyc. we combed central park to peek at birds, carrying cameras as long as my forearm. we danced at @positivedeviancenyc's amazing masked event (whose crowdfunding project you should totally back!!)

we walked, endlessly, to get food, to get somewhere, to get anywhere. winter was turning to spring; the sky stretched endless above us.

and so, the elephant in the room: i do mask everywhere. i will not lie. it's not easy, especially in hot ass humid ass stinkapit florida. but i really, truly believe it's the right thing to do. it's like putting away money in your 401k -- maybe you won't start seeing benefits until you're old as balls, but you'll be grateful to your younger self one day.

it's both a protection for the future self, and a protection for the present community; there are so many vulnerable people we can uphold; we collectively have so many hands. i love my fellow maskers. we are the net that saves us.

for my birthday, i gave myself the gift of a deadline -- one that allows me to share a little of my songwriting with you. hopeful and melancholic, like the turn of the seasons. i hope you like it. this on
