POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Day two of the Xciting Festival began with the film Crooked, presented as a tribute to the recently passed rapper Sensational.

The evening continued with Alex Cortex, followed by an audiovisual experience by Sote & Tarik Barri.

The night unfolded with performances by Psychic Defence, Lise Barkas, Liminal Resonatrix feat. Nicola Romanò, and finally Madteo, who closed the night.

Another full house, amazing energy, and a deeply engaged audience.

A huge thank you to everyone who came, to all the artists who shared their work with us, and to the entire team for making these two days possible.

The eighth edition of the Xciting Festival explores the intersection of club culture and contemporary music. Experimental hip-hop and techno meet noise, electroacoustic music, and contemporary music, complemented by historical instruments such as the spinet and the bagpipes. Featuring artists from the U.S., Iran, and numerous European countries, the festival brings international perspectives to Stuttgart that are rarely seen here—or are being presented for the first time.

A few days ago I hosted a listening session which was curated by Arefe Hekmatpanah and because of this event I had the chance to listen deeply into Ata Ebtekar’s sonic world.
As artists, we walk and create along paths paved by those who came before us. Sometimes, if we are fortunate, we find an opening through which to carve a path of our own.

Since first becoming drawn to sound, experimental / electronic music, I have had the privilege of encountering the work of extraordinary thinkers and composers from John Cage and Alvin Lucier to Terre Thaemlitz, and many others.

Yet one question has remained with me throughout the years: coming from the rich heritage of Iranian musical culture, how can an artist carry that culture into their work without reducing it to the exotic? How can one honour a tradition while creating a new world ,one that opens onto unexplored horizons?

For me, Ata Ebtekar (aka Sote) inhabits precisely this space. He has absorbed and transformed his heritage so profoundly that his work can truly be called Iranian electronic music.

The forms, textures, rhythms, and tonalities of his pieces are at once intricate and elemental. Listening feels like gazing into an ancient carpet woven centuries ago, then entering it through a VR headset, travelling across its landscapes, and experiencing its hidden dimensions from within.

It is both an honour and a privilege to sometimes have my name mentioned alongside his in interviews and writings about Iran’s electronic and experimental music scene.

INTRODUCING:

@ata_ebtekar & @tarik_barri

Audio-Visual | Electroacoustic

In their latest collaboration Majestic Noise, Sote (Ata Ebtekar) and Tarik Barri create immersive audiovisual worlds that, despite their abstraction, carry a strong visceral and symbolic impact. A powerful journey where beauty persists, even in times of tension.

See them live on Sept. 12, 2026.

“Brass Tacks” by Sote (Parallel Persia, 2019)

One of the tracks on heavy rotation in our orbit lately, first pick from the curation.

Persian tradition and modular synthesis collapsing into one another. Ata Ebtekar rebuilding electronic music as if it grew from a different root entirely.
