‘Between Medical Emergencies’ by Ella Ray – a review of ‘Beverly’s Athens’ (on view January 16-March 21, 2026 at @athenaeum_uga) – calls attention to the lessons in black survival embedded in Buchanan’s practice

available now in ISSUE 008: LIBRA METHODOLOGY via our website

🩷

“Beverly Buchanan’s practice deftly explored material ruination and black continuation. She navigated numerous, overlapping chronic illnesses, placing her in a sprawling lineage of sick and disabled black women artists who inform my knowing that alternative worlds can and will exist. The labor it takes to make a life as a sick black woman—piecing together whole intricate ecosystems from fragments in the face of institutional, social, and physical desertion—is, in some ways, what Buchanan made art about and studied her entire career…

Knowing that [Buchanan] was chronically ill, I want to consider how drawing a bridge between the sick body, Buchanan’s sick body in particular, and the artist’s enamorment with dwellings made from remnants and off-cuts might guide us in how we speak to histories of survival without glamorizing black (disabled) suffering.” – Ella Ray

Had the chance to visit Athens to tour @uga_dodd_art

We started at the @athenaeum_uga with Erin Johnson’s exhibition and then we received a tour of the Main Art Building and met some of the school’s MFA candidates.

A few things I didn’t know UGA offered degrees in: jewelry and metalwork, interior design, animation, and more. And if you’ve ever considered going back to school to study Studio Art, highly consider applying to Dodd’s program, as it is fully funded! It’s a competitive application process but it’s highly worth it to give it a shot.

My first completed collection (better picts to come just didn't want to procrastinate getting this out there)..feeling vulnerable and yet completely aware that nothing I create is actually for me to keep so here goes nothing... In the five-piece series “Can I Go Out And Play”, Micha Henry Davis explores the complexities of being an abused child—the confusion of knowing that help is needed, that rescue is needed, while also confronting the terrifying reality that the people from whom you need rescuing are often the very people you must turn to for help. That uncertainty could be terrifying. And yet, beneath it all, he was still a child: playful, curious, imaginative, and carrying—though buried deeply on some days—a sense of joy and wonder about the world.
“Can I Go Out And Play” is a story of waking each day knowing that your life is on fire, while still longing for the simple, innocent freedom of being a child—to run outside, to play, to explore, and to experience the world as something full of possibility. It is the story of holding both truths at once: the awareness of danger and irrepressible joy. 1of5 12x12 2of5 12x16 3of5 24x24 4of5 24x20 5of5 24x20 Medium/Materials: Gesso, acrylic, gouache, print media, mixed paper, oil pastel, dye ink, metallic flakes, glue, isolation coat, varnish, cold wax on canvas.

Join us next Tuesday for our first Visiting Artist Talk of the year with graphic artist Kelli Anderson at 5:30 pm in room S151

Kelli Anderson uses handheld revelations to reconnect people with the depth and possibility of their world. Her books force readers to touch paper. She created This Book is a Camera (MoMA)—which transforms into a working camera—and This Book is a Planetarium (Chronicle)—which houses paper devices (including a planetarium) and has sold more than 100,000 copies. Alphabet in Motion, an interactive book about typography and technology was published to wide acclaim in the Fall of 2025. Other projects include a viral paper record player and—with The Yes Men—a utopian counterfeited New York Times, which won the Ars Electronica Prix. Doctors without Borders have used the award-winning Tinybop Human Body app she illustrated to communicate illness and treatment nonverbally to their patients in remote areas. Clients include NPR, the New Yorker, the Guggenheim, MoMA, Apple, and the New York Times. She has been nominated for the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award twice and teaches at NYU, SVA, and Cooper Union.
