“Legacy”.

That’s the word that comes to mind when I think of Howard University. But it didn’t start with me.

My Howard legacy began almost 80 years ago with my great-aunt, Caryl Millicent Barnes. She set the trend, and my grandmother, Beverly Barnes, followed in her footsteps. While at Howard, she met my grandfather, James Hobson Kelch, a basketball player. They married and raised three children, two of whom became Bison—my mother and my aunt.

While at Howard, my mother met my father, who was also there with his sisters, my aunts. My parents married, and the legacy that began 80 years ago now culminates with me—a future Bison.

With such a rich family history at Howard, the school had been a part of my life and identity since birth. I’ve been to homecomings almost every other year, had tons and tons of merch in my house, but I still hadn’t truly experienced the school for myself. That all changed during my junior year, when I went on a three-day campus tour with the Atlanta alumni club. I met amazing people and had great experiences, but most of all, I fell in love with the school.

A legacy that began long before me now becomes my own. Howard University, I’m coming home.
