I made a deal with myself: light moments only, staying strictly in the yellow light. Life has definitely been life-ing lately, but I’ve been living through it anyway.

1. I am moving. 📦

Which is the absolute worst. I hate moving. Hate it. For context on my moving trauma: during the first 4 of the 9 years since I moved back home to NYC, I insanely kept my Atlanta apartment, too. It took @melissamagal gently explaining that I was being unhinged—and graciously helping me pack up an entire home in 36 hours—to finally let it go. (Absolute saint behavior on Melissa's part.)

Ideally, I’d still be flying back and forth to my Atlanta plant haven—which my daughter fondly (and accurately) called a full-blown rainforest. But here I am, taping up boxes, questioning all my life choices. I really need to think about actually settling down one of these days... though I must admit, this decade of empty-nester freedom has been sweet!

The silver lining? While packing, I stumbled upon my 2025–2026 vision board and realized… wait, I actually did the damn thing! Tons of travel, endless concerts, arts programs, and global partnerships. A gentle reminder to write it down and make it plain. Ayyyyye! 🙌🏾

2. Fall is falling. 🍂

The trees are turning, the yellow leaves are out in full force, and I am in heaven. Fall weather + Stevie Wonder playing in the background = pure, unbothered in love mood @steviewonderlegacy

3. A Caribbean awakening. 🫓

My Fisk sister brought over Roti while I was drowning in packing tape. Somehow, despite chilling in Brooklyn all these years, this was my first time having Roti. (I know, I know… how?!) The word comes from the Sanskrit roṭikā (bread), brought to the Caribbean in the 19th century by Indian indentured laborers, where Trinidad, Guyana, and Jamaica turned it into the legendary curry-filled wrap we love today. Jah got the chicken, I got the beef, and it was ridiculously delicious. It's so heavy & hearty that one wrap could easily feed a family of three. That’s not just food—that’s act-of-kindness food. Exactly what I needed mid-packing meltdown.

4. I was supposed to be in LA this weekend e

#Fridaytrek. Light moments. Starting off this week’s #FridayTrek with a little peek into my morning routine. ☕✨

I love getting to work early every single day. I blast my music 🎶, dance around my classroom, and sip my coffee—it’s how I intentionally set my energy for the day. Teaching is hard work, and let’s be honest, school politics can get interesting… but my mood is always powered by an internal vibe. Today’s morning soundtrack? Some good old Anthony Hamilton. Absolutely top-tier stuff. 🎧

A few highlights from today:

📚 Rich Conversations: My book club intervention group is currently reading Child of the Dream by Sharon Robinson. Today, we had such a deep, thoughtful discussion comparing the state of the world in 1963 to where we are now in 2026. So much has changed... yet in some ways, so much has gotten tougher. Watching these students engage like this gives me hope. @scholastic

💃Joy: Chaperoned the school dance after hours! Honestly, it’s such a wonderful way our school infuses and encourages pure joy for our kids (and keeps us teachers on our toes!).

🌮 New Favorite Spot: Discovered Coppelia NYC! My dad would have absolutely loved this place. I can’t believe I’ve walked past it every single day and never stepped inside. It’s open 24 hours, the food was incredible, and literally every dish coming out of the kitchen looked amazing. Special shoutout to Guillermo and Miguel for taking such great care of me! @coppelianyc1

Ending the week with a grateful heart.

In hard soil, beautiful things still bloom. 🌸

A few light moments from a heavy week:

Made it through the work week with a smile, despite some health hurdles. 💛

Was surprised twice by my dear friend—leading to a delicious dinner at @eataly, making new friends, and a wonderful night at the theater. Go see @schoolgirls by @jocelynboih at @manhattantheatreclub! 🎭✨

One of my students made me a handmade bookmark that reads "Queen Ms. Peck" 👑

Soaking in unexpected acts of kindness.

Wedding planning progress for my little sis! 💍

Grateful for the light in between the hard moments. Trekked everyday

So many compliments on my shirt by @kultural_adornments

- It was great seeing you, Lisa @cumbedance I gotta get back to dance. @godsproperty I wish you were doing #danceforjoy too

Saw @courtneybvance last night. We didn't harass him. But we're big fans.

@JOCELYNBIOH THANK YOU 😊

Run, don’t walk, to go see Jocelyn Bioh’s School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play! It was just extended through November 15, so you still have time, but get your tickets ASAP. First and foremost, I always try to prioritize seeing theatre that reflects the stories of people who look like me—we need so many more of them on stage. School Girls does not disappoint! It takes you on a complete emotional rollercoaster where you feel every single thing: pure joy, belly-aching laughter, and deep nostalgia. But you also feel the real weight and sadness of heavy topics like colorism—a toxic social construct and brainwashing that drives women who should be uplifting each other to tear each other down instead. This show truly has it all: heart, humor, sharp commentary, and powerful performances. Do yourself a favor and catch it before it’s gone!
