At night, nature shows itself from a very different side in my studio....
Created by myself for a dear friend whose favorite color is night.
A black spray-painted lemon pestle acts as a flower. The size of the artwork is 10.5 x 15 cm. I used alkyd paint and acrylic on paper that I pasted on a failed piece of art consisting of the back of a cheap frame on which I mounted wooden blocks, giving the whole thing a slightly more professional look.

‘connecting the dots’
I’m still working on a series of small paintings made with acrylic and/or oil paint (10.5x 14 cm) on paper or canvas or wood that express the feeling of one day being very eager to become big and compelling.

People often feel the need to make sense of abstract art; it is the human urge to create meaning that always plays a role. By nature, we are curious creatures who seek to understand the world around us. Abstract art, which often does not offer a direct representation of reality, challenges this need and only raises questions. Questions about the artist’s meaning. Questions about the artist’s intention. Abstract art simply invites a subjective experience, nothing more. And nothing less, either.

‘meeting on the farm’
acrylic on coated paper
landscape postcard
10,5 x 15 cm

last year i was still painting in my studio in the city of amsterdam and now i’m working in my studio which is in the middle of nature. many people asked me if my inspiration was influenced by this move. although i didn’t know the answer to that right away, i noticed from my work that it was. my art was changing without me realizing it.
so i recently started living and working in the woods near a small river on a dirt road. but, and i use a quote from haruki murakami: ‘no matter how far you travel, you can never get away from yourself. it’s like your shadow, it follows you everywhere’. the truism. I wanted to call the work ‘this is what freedom looks like’, but i could put that with every work of art I make here. by now i understand that this specific freedom exists in my head.
