Siphopteron makisig. 📍Tulamben. Bali.
Siphopteron makisig is a tiny species of translucent sea slug in the family Gastropteridae, officially discovered in 2017.

🔻Key Characteristics
🔹Size: Measures only 3 to 8 millimeters in length.

🔹Appearance: Translucent white body with vibrant yellow, orange, and red borders.

🔹Mating: Hermaphroditic creatures that use traumatic insemination, stabbing their partner in the head with a penile stylet.

Siphopteron makisig belongs to a unique group of gastropods known colloquially as bat-winged slugs due to their wing-like parapodia.

🔻Geographic Distribution & Habitat
🔹Range: They are native to the tropical waters of the Western Pacific Ocean.

🔹Specific Locations: Documented sightings and specimens originate from Romblon Island and Anilao in the Philippines, Hong Kong, and Milne Bay Province in Papua New Guinea.

🔹Depth & Substrate: They typically reside in shallow to medium ocean depths ranging from 20 to 90 feet (approx. 6 to 27 meters).

🔹Microhabitat: They live primarily on sand beds and are often found nestled within complex microalgal formations.

🔻Cephalo-Traumatic Mating Behavior
🔹Simultaneous Hermaphrodites: During a single mating encounter, both individuals simultaneously act as the male and the female.

🔹The Injection: Prior to standard genital insemination, each slug extends a flexible, weaponized penile appendage equipped with a hard, sharp stylet.

🔹Targeting the Brain: Evolutionary biologists noted this species as the first documented animal to specifically stab its partner directly between the eyes.

🔹Neurological Manipulation: The stylet injects prostate fluids directly into the head. Scientists hypothesize this biological fluid targets the central nervous system to increase sperm absorption or alter the partner’s short-term reproductive output.
