What can a painting hold that a life story cannot explain?

A field of cabbages. A sick child. A man painting a wall. Reading Karl Ove Knausgård’s "So Much Longing in So Little Space", I return to Edvard Munch through the distance between what an image shows and what it makes us feel.

My essay, “The Measure of Painting: Karl Ove Knausgård and What Life Does Not Explain,” follows the writer into this distance: through paintings, memories and the exhibition he curated at @munchmuseum , where the space between works becomes another way of writing.

Biography brings us close. Colour, matter and rhythm carry the encounter further. Each new gaze gives the painting a present Munch never knew.

What happens when a painting brings to light something we do not yet know about ourselves?
My new essay for ATPdiary’s “Figure della scrittura#5” series explores María Gainza’s Optic Nerve: “What a Painting Knows About Us. María Gainza and Indirect Autobiography.”
Through paintings, family memories and artists’ lives, Gainza writes an autobiography shaped by distance. Images bring an unnamed fear into view, alter a memory, offer a way into what has remained beyond the frame of one’s own life.
Writing about oneself becomes a way of recognising that something of us already exists elsewhere: in a colour, a glimpsed figure, the life of someone we have never known.

What happens when an image changes the way we tell our own story?
In 'The Lonely City" Olivia Laing moves through the work of Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Henry Darger and David Wojnarowicz. Windows, surfaces, secret worlds and exposed bodies become ways of writing about loneliness and recognising the ties that connect us to others.

What Time Does Not Separate.

At Kolumba in Cologne, the past inhabits the walls, the ground, the light. Within Peter Zumthor’s architecture, ruins and contemporary works share a space where looking becomes a way of attending to lives beyond our own.

For the latest chapter of “In the Time of the Other”, my series for @atpdiary, I explore a museum where preservation allows things to remain open to new encounters. What survives continues to act upon the present; each room gives that encounter a different form.

A name comes to mind before Rachel Cusk gives us one.

In "Parade", different artists share the initial G.

A painting, a spider, a life half remembered: each seems to invite recognition. But once we think we know who the artist is, what do we begin to believe about the person Cusk has invented?

My new essay, “The Missing Name: Rachel Cusk and the Recognisability of the Artist,” is out now in Figures, Written on @atpdiary.

A garden is not only something we look at.
We listen to it.
At the Holy See Pavilion in Venice, the living becomes a form of time: growing, changing, holding voices, silences, presences.

ENGLISH
Today ATP Diary publishes an article by Giulio Fonseca dedicated to Trullo Ulìa.
Rather than simply portraying a place, the article reflects on what it might mean today to inhabit, experience and reactivate Puglia through art.
We found ourselves in many of the reflections in the text: the idea of a house that does not want to become a gallery, nor simply a backdrop for tourism, but a space open to art, artists, ideas and encounters.
Trullo Ulìa was born precisely from this desire: to bring together home, architecture, landscape and contemporary practices, exploring a form of hospitality that is also cultural.
Thank you to Giulio Fonseca and ATP Diary for looking at Ulìa with such care and attention.
“A house for a contemporary Puglia.”

Episode IX of my column Nel Tempo dell’Altro is now online, dedicated to the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris.

Across nine museums, a distinct museological position has emerged: contemporary art matters not when it merely updates or embellishes the past, but when it makes that past newly unsettled. Its force lies in the knowledge it produces from the historical, material and symbolic specificity of each museum.

FIGURE DELLA SCRITTURA

There are figures that pass from art history into writing, taking on an unexpected form. Among others, Deborah Levy looks at Gertrude Stein through the portraits that constructed and multiplied her image; Ali Smith reinvents Francesco del Cossa in How to Be Both; in Parade, Rachel Cusk weaves into fiction lives, gestures, and works traceable to real artists; Olivia Laing, in The Lonely City, explores urban loneliness through the lives and works of Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Henry Darger, and David Wojnarowicz; Karl Ove Knausgård encounters Edvard Munch, asking what in painting exceeds biography.
Figures, Written, curated by Rita Selvaggio, follows these passages between art and literature: not to seek in words the equivalent of an image, but to observe what happens when an artist, an artwork, or a portrait becomes material for literary form.
