I recently went on an art retreat to Morocco, organized by @uptrekcom @mikelowerystudio @katrinwiehle.
Going into it, I wasn’t really sure what to expect. At the very least, I was hoping to have some relaxed, focused time to just sit and draw.
Not to sound too dramatic, but it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life.

Not only because the location, food, activities, and the company of fellow artists were beyond wonderful. But also because I think I’ve had an artistic epiphany about art style, burnout, art block, and keeping a sketchbook.

Discovering one’s art style is the closest thing to deciding what kind of person you want to be. It’s about the decisions you make constantly. Those patterns of behavior eventually become your personality or, in the case of art, your art style. I have more thoughts but don’t want to turn this into a rant. Suffice it to say, it was interesting to see clearly that I, in fact, have my own art style.

My second nugget of art gold from this trip was how profound it is to actually keep an art sketchbook. Of course, we all have our smartphones for capturing moments in our day-to-day life, but there is something extra special and meditative about taking the time to draw not just the actuality of the places and events that occurred, but also the feelings and thoughts you had in those moments. Those humble, joyful moments—the important parts of life—are eventually going to be lost or fade from our memories with time in the sea of other moments.

It makes you notice, see, and feel life differently. I noticed that I have a new level of awareness about my life and the things that spark joy in it, which was a net positive in terms of increasing my overall happiness.

Last note: I don’t identify as antisocial anymore. I’m very social, but only with top-shelf people.

We just wrapped up an incredible week in France on our sketchbook retreat with some of the best humans ever. Thank you so much to the artists who joined us and to @uptrekcom for putting together such a great event. Oh! And the folks at @la_palanque who made everything absolutely perfect.
