Always a pleasure to share the music whenever the king of modern funk is in town. Good dude! 🫡

This hurts.

I was blessed to meet Ananda in 2019, when I saw a post for an open jam down the street, and checked it out. @thejamnation was the community—all improv, musicians of any skill level welcome, as long as they listened and left space for each other. I had found my people.

Ananda was the undeniable heart of the jam. Music was in her blood. She would feel the vibe of what was cooking, literally transform her voice into a custom character, her raw microtonalities fitting the song like a glove.

She could jump into a flow state on command, her words containing most the lucid stories imaginable, often as she locked eyes and stared directly into your soul, taking you with her on the journey into the unknown. Her words were wholly integrative of her experience—she would take in the energy of the room, the verse of the singer before, the call of the horns, the other person obliviously hogging the mic that needed to come back to earth. She would draw from whatever she had going on in her personal life and extemporize live on stage, the ultimate act of daring and vulnerability.

She would say that music was her therapy, and we were blessed to be present in that process (it was therapy for us too). We weren’t aware of how true that was, given that she held her cancer diagnosis for a year of this time. On a Zoom call during the pandemic, she would share her diagnosis with us, before making it public the next month. This further solidified our feeling as a Jam Fam (even if a compartmentalized one), and strengthened our resolve to come out of the pandemic and to continue to hold that space and therapeutic release for Ananda, and for others, and the flame of the jam continues burning brightly to this day.

Ananda maintained a multitude of special individual relationships and she always remained grounded, despite her celebrity, her capacity to connect and love others knew no bounds.

I know this world shone brighter with Ananda in it, and there will never be another quite like her.

I also know that we will continue holding the flame and the space for others to step into, until we all meet again on the other side, transformed.

❤️🙏🏼👑✊🏾🙌🏼🕊️,
-Dan
