leaving my heart in peru 🤍

i can’t even put into words what this week has meant to me. coming in as a nursing student, i had my nerves, but i’m leaving forever changed. having the opportunity to serve in peru as a pediatric OR circulator, interact with patients and families, and explore the beautiful land, it is has been one of the best experiences of my life. i am forever grateful for the team i got to work with and how quickly they became family.

When beginning my journey in healthcare, I always knew I wanted to serve underprivileged and underserved communities. Deep down, I’ve always carried a passion for healing and giving back, especially for those who don’t have access to the care they deserve.

Earlier this year, I was invited to join a phenomenal group of medical professionals who, I later realized, were nothing short of amazing human beings. People who made the time and effort and, most importantly, left behind the people and places they loved to extend the privilege of healthcare to the beautiful people of Cusco, Peru.

With this being my first mission trip, I was struck by how easily we can take access to quality healthcare for granted here in the U.S. The patients we cared for came to us from vast distances, some walking miles across the Sacred Valley just to be seen. Our team worked for five days to care for as many patients as possible, from little ones to grandparents to future newlyweds.

I think it’s safe to say I’ve returned from this philanthropic mission with a new purpose, a new outlook on life, and a new perspective.

Above all, I’m hopeful to return every year and am eternally grateful for the opportunity to do a little bit of good the world. Wherever life takes me, may service always remain a part of my purpose. ❤️‍🩹
