« let me write this to you with my tongue.

every new tool opens a new possibility for art, another way of expressing emotions, ideas and values.

some tools seem to carry an energy that pulls us further away from our humanity. others bring us closer to it, reconnecting us with our bodies, our biology, and the things we already possess.

as some of you may know, i have been fascinated by the mouth and its possibilities for a long time. there is something deeply moving to me about seeing technology turn its attention towards a part of the body that has been there, quietly doing so much. it feels deeply connected to my own practice.

this is what fascinates me about the mouthpad, created by @augmentaltech , a company born out of research at @mit . it gives the tongue another voice, allowing it to become an interface between the body and the digital world. developed with accessibility at its core, it offers another path for communication and interaction to people whose mobility makes conventional interfaces difficult or impossible to use. the mouthpad connects wirelessly to digital devices via bluetooth.

the one i am wearing here was custom-fitted to my own palate, using 3d scans of my mouth.

the tongue is an extraordinary piece of biology. eight muscles, no bones. a muscular structure able to change its shape, extend, contract and move with remarkable precision. a sensory organ, a tool of speech and mouvement.
a place of desire, refusal and resistance.

i am currently working with augmental on a very exciting future project. for now i simply wanted to share this encounter, and my admiration for what they are exploring.

And for once, my tongue can express itself in silence. »

Your tongue can now become your computer mouse.

This is MouthPad, built by a startup called Augmental. It's basically a small device that sits against the roof of your mouth, with a tiny trackpad built in.

Move your tongue, and the cursor moves. Press against it to click. You can even scroll and drag, all without touching your computer.

It connects over Bluetooth, just like a regular mouse.

But here's the crazy part: every MouthPad is custom-made for your mouth using a dental scan, with all the electronics sealed inside to protect them from saliva.

While this might sound like a weird gadget, it's actually built for something much more useful. For people who can't reliably use their hands, including people with quadriplegia, this can give them another way to independently control their phones and computers — without needing a brain implant.

This isn't just a lab experiment. More than 100 people with mobility challenges have reportedly used it, with some wearing it for up to 16 hours a day.

@augmentaltech has officially launched its MouthPad to the U.S. public, a hands-free computer controller that sits on the roof of your mouth and turns tongue and head movements into cursor controls and clicks.

The MouthPad works like a trackpad for your tongue and connects through Bluetooth to phones, tablets, and computers. It supports iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux without requiring special software.

The technology was initially developed with accessibility in mind, particularly for people with limited hand mobility. Augmental says more than 100 people with mobility challenges have already used the device, while its waitlist has grown to more than 6,300 applicants. The MouthPad is now publicly available in the U.S. for $1,400, excluding the required dental scan.

Augmental is an MIT Media Lab spinout focused on developing new human-computer interfaces that allow people to interact with technology in more natural and accessible ways.

MIT Media Lab spinoff Augmental has officially launched public U.S. sales for MouthPad, a 1mm thick custom oral device that lets users control computers, phones, and tablets using tongue movements.

Positioned over the upper teeth, the device integrates a pressure sensitive trackpad, motion sensors for head tracking, and sip gestures for clicking. In testing, one user achieved a cursor task speed of 10.47 bits per second matching the performance of surgical brain computer interfaces without invasive procedures.

Alongside MouthPad ($1,400), Augmental introduced VOX ($200), a whisper level dictation pendant. Long term, the company aims to combine both devices to enable silent speech to text driven entirely by internal tongue motion.
